One of the themes of this summer has been seeing how well Khawaja plays the defensive shot.

Is there anyone less Bazball than Usman Khawaja?

Did someone say weather forecasting has improved?! Pfffff.

Joe Root has had a really good series with the ball so far.
Warner 30, Khawaja 41
Hands on head time for Joe Root as David Warner plays and misses with a cut shot off the back foot. A uppish drive then flies on the bounce to backward point next ball.
That stirred the crowd from their post-lunch slumber.

There's not a lot through the air and the pitch itself is quite slow.
Joe Root will open at the other end.
Target 384
A sedate start to the session, with the one run off it.
We have just seen a shot of Mark Wood on the England balcony, but he jogs back onto the field at the end of the over.
Phew.
It is pretty gloomy at The Oval but crucially it is dry as the players make their way to the middle.
It looks like James Anderson will open up the afternoon session.

Mark Wood was on the field throughout that session. There has been no suggestion he is injured. England might just be saving him for when the ball might reverse?

Weather forecasting technology has hugely improved since the rules concerning cricket play were formulated. If it is fairly clear that rain is going to disrupt play at some point, surely the umpires should be permitted to make some common-sense decisions regarding lunch and other timings in order to maximize playing time. Technology is used in so many other areas of cricket. Why not playing times? Why live in the past?

It is a fair point, John. And one we pondered last week after the soggy draw at Old Trafford.

I’ve just been in for my lunch but while I have the drizzle has stopped and the covers are nowhere to be seen.
A lot of you have been texting in asking why Mark Wood did not bowl this morning.
The honest answer is we don't know either. As far as we know he isn't injured.
Mark Butcher on TV suggested England may be waiting until the ball starts to reverse to bring him on.
Thanks, Ffion. Great stint as ever.
I'll start with with some good news, it looks to have stopped raining.
The bad news is the radar is showing more on the way, so we could see some more disruption this afternoon.
It's now time for me to hand over to Tom Mallows to take you through the afternoon, where we will hopefully some cricket and not too much rain.

Phil Roberts: Stokes taking a lesson from Brearley maybe? Headingly 1981 he did not give Bob Willis the new ball and he was so angry he blew the Australians away when they only needed 129. How angry is Mark Wood or still not up to full steam?
However, in true Stuart Broad style, he managed to write his name into even more cricket history by hitting the final ball he faced for six before Todd Murphy pinned Anderson lbw at the other end.
Broad hits last ball in Test cricket for six
But, the morning did belong to Stuart Broad as he walked out to bat with his mate Jimmy Anderson for the last time in Test cricket.
The end of an era.
