This might be unpopular, but this match is not a Broad testimonial. The distraction of this has only benefited the Aussie Tortoise which is looking quite capable of beating the Hare (as usual) and having tossed away wickets like confetti, England could easily be 50 runs short, just like in the 1st Test.

Australia have batted really well even with the impact of the crowd cheering on Stuart Broad. Warner and Khawaja have responded well.

And on that note, the covers are on and the drizzle has started. We'll keep you updated as soon as we have any news about the restart.

  4. Lunch - Aus 75-0published at 24 overs

    Target 384

Joe Root's over ends with a very ambitious lbw appeal down the leg side.

The ground staff are poised with the covers, but Usman Khawaja and David Warner leave for lunch having made a very solid start to Australia's chase.

And Stuart Broad has been made to wait a little longer for a fairytale ending.

But, the forecast is worse after around 2pm.

Mark Wood is definitely not injured, I'm sat by where he was fielding. Someone shouted at him "why aren't you bowling" and he shrugged.

It's strangely quiet now. I can hear Ben Stokes' encouragement to his bowlers from 60m away.

  7. Aus 72-0published at 23 overs

    Target 284

Australia's style may not be particularly eye-catching but it's done its job.

The crowd is quiet, they've survived the new ball, and are almost through to lunch unscathed.

Another Jimmy Anderson maiden, and it looks like we're going to have to wait until after the break for Mark Wood.

Morning all from Perth. Is Mark Wood injured or has he upset Stokes? We need something different.

Can someone tell me why Mark Wood is not bowling?

I wonder if it's worth putting another slip in and forcing Khawaja to drive.

Something gives... but it goes Australia's away.

Back to back fours to Khawaja, one a little edgy, the other nicely guided past point.

England's frustration continues, but where is Mark Wood?

    Ugh. So close.

Jimmy Anderson probes away at Usman Khawaja with a maiden, the last ball drawing an appeal for a caught behind but his bat hit the floor.

It does feel like something is coming. Something's going to give.

Joe Root is an underrated bowler to left-handers, he changes his pace up really nicely. He thinks like a batter so he's always one step ahead.

  14. Aus 63-0published at 20 overs

    I like your thinking, Jeremy.

Here's Joe Root, so often England's golden arm.

He concedes just two as Australia seem set on just plodding through to lunch. Typical.

Ben Stokes has got one of his crazy fields, Broad is trying everything, the ball is beginning to do things, the wicket is coming.

I think this is a tactical field from Stokes but if there was ever a time to introduce Mark Wood, a fast bowler who has made such an impact in this series, it's now.

  17. Aus 61-0published at 19 overs

Usman Khawaja blocks out a Stuart Broad maiden.

These two have taken quite a lot out of the excitement out of this morning's hype but playing irritatingly sensibly.

However, in today's edition of celeb spotting at The Oval (after yesterday gave us Mick Jagger), Hugh Jackman is in attendance.

David Warner is that Mr. Momentum. Things can turn around quickly and if you get a 100 partnership at the top then the other team gets nervous.

  19. Aus 61-0published at 18 overs

Ben Stokes is having a bit of fun with tinkering the field, placing three fielders on the drive in front of the batter.

At the end of Moeen's over, David Warner calls for a drink and Cameron Green greets him, with a height difference of about three feet between them.
