    Essex 304 & 139-1 v Middlesex 179

It's all been fairly serene from Essex this morning, with Alastair Cook and Tom Westley content to knock the bowling around.

Essex need to win this game to keep the title race alive, so you'd expect to see more shots as this session wears on.

How many will Westley want before the declaration comes...

    Northants 232 & 266 v Lancs 524

    5-25 for 32-year-old occasional leggy Luke Wells - a career-best.

Ben Sanderson mis-times into the blue and departs, caught by Will WIlliams, for 19.

Rock-bottom Northants head to Edgbaston on Sunday still 26 points adrift of safety while Lancashire host Middlesex aiming to move into the top-three.

Northants visit Surrey and host Essex in their final two games... in all likelihood their final Division One games for a while, at least.

    Derbys 111-2 v Yorks - target 572

After Wayne Madsen's flurry of runs in the previous Ben Coad over, the bowler keeps him in check this time - it's a maiden.

Still no change by Yorkshire as George Hill continues and Harry Came dabs past the slips for four.

    Northants 232 & 259-9 v Lancs 524

Almighty slog-sweep over the stand from Ben Sanderson off Tom Hartley.

    New balls please.

Still another 31 runs needed to make Lancashire bat again, however.

    Northants 232 & 252-9 v Lancs 524

Ben Sanderson larrups Tom Hartley to cow corner for a four to bring up the milestone.

It won't mean much in the grand scheme of things.

WICKET Hudson-Prentice st Robinson b Parkinson 64published at 11:13 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 295

Durham will need 57 to win at the Riverside.

Sussex's stubborn last-wicket stand comes to an end as Fynn Hudson-Prentice charges down the track to spinner Matt Parkinson, swishes at the ball and makes no contact, allowing keeper Ollie Robinson to flatten two stumps.

FHP faced 75 balls for his 64, hitting four fours, and Henry Crocombe finishes 18 not out. Parkinson's final figures are 4-80.

  7. wicket

WICKET White c Jennings b Wells 6published at 11:08 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 244-9 v Lancs 524

Luke Wells has 4-21. The 32-year-old occasional spinner is one away from career-best figures.

Three balls after being smashed for six by Jack White, he draws an edge which flicks up off Phil Salt's thigh and loops to Keaton Jennings for a dolly at first slip.

Ben Sanderson is last man in.

    Start the car.

  8. Postpublished at 11:06 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Hampshire 308 & 303-3dec v Somerset 137 & 119-4

Kyle Abbott is convinced he's had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught behind but umpire Ben Debenham is unmoved.

There was a little push outside off but no obvious noise. The bowler had the best view but TKC stands his ground and remains there on 13.

  9. Postpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Sussex 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 290-9

Three singles for Sussex from the latest Ben Raine over and their lead nudges past 50.

"They've been going nicely these two," says BBC Radio Newcastle's Martin Emmerson.

    Derbys 103-2 v Yorks - target 572

Has Wayne Madsen dropped into Hundred mode?

He shuffles down the track to Ben Coad and slices unconvincingly over cover for four.

Madsen uses his feet again to the next one, but this time keeps it on the ground as he finds the boundary again.

Why stop there? A glorious straight six by the 29-year-old and Derbyshire's total reaches three figures - and he has 27 off 19 balls.

    WICKET Taylor c & b Wells 4published at 11:00 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 232-8 v Lancs 524

    OUTRAGEOUS CATCH. WOW.

Tom Taylor has hit this hard but Luke Wells has contorted in his follow through and flung his left hand out and somehow the ball has stuck... almost behind him. His arm was fully extended.

Taylor cannot believe what he's seen.

Brilliant bowling and a superb catch. Stunning. He has 3-13 from five overs. He didn't bowl in the opening three days.

Jack White is the new man with Northants needing at least 60 to avoid an innings defeat.

  12. wicket

WICKET Zaib c Salt b Wells 45published at 10:58 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 228-7 v Lancs 524

Saif Zaib had played really nicely but he tries to cut a short, wide one from Luke Wells and can only feather an edge to Phil Salt behind the stumps.

Wells has 2-9 in his fifth over.

Tom Taylor and Justin Broad come together with Northants still needing 64 to avoid an innings defeat.

  13. Postpublished at 10:56 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 285-9

The first boundary of the day at the Riverside as Henry Crocombe plays a loose shot at Ben Raine and edges between second slip and gully. The Sussex number 11 was fortunate to escape there.

  14. Postpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Hampshire 308 & 303-3dec v Somerset 137 & 119-4

Tom Kohler-Cadmore has dug deep into the textbook to produce a sublime straight drive off Kyle Abbott.

It sails an inch to the off-side off the stumps at the other end of the crease before going all the way to the fence.

He has two boundaries in his 13. Somerset need one of his special innings here.

    383 is the ask.

The former England captain defends Josh de Caires into the vacant midwicket region, and ambles through for a leisurely single that takes him to 50.

It's his second in the match, and his 124th in first-class cricket.

    Some player.

  16. Postpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Derbys 78-2 v Yorks - target 572

George Hill is sharing the early overs with Ben Coad at Scarborough.

His latest over is a tidy one until the final ball, which Wayne Madsen drives through the covers for four.

He didn't time that perfectly, but it had enough 'legs'.

  17. wicket

WICKET Umeed c Dawson b Abbas 25published at 10:50 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Hampshire 308 & 303-3dec v Somerset 137 & 113-4

Good length ball from Mo Abbas finds the outside edge of Andy Umeed's bat and Liam Dawson takes a good catch near his throat at first slip.

Somerset are still 389 adrift with only six wickets in hand, now.

James Rew is the new batter. What can the teenager do to reverse the momentum?

  18. Postpublished at 10:47 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Durham 505-9 dec v Sussex 266 & 278-9

The scoreboard is ticking over nicely for Sussex this morning as Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Henry Crocombe add six runs from the latest Ben Raine over. The lead, though, is only 39.

  19. wicket

WICKET McManus c Bell b Wells 24published at 10:47 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Northants 232 & 221-6 v Lancs 524

Inside edge onto the pads which pops up to short leg for a simple catch. Lewis McManus has to go as his 56-run partnership with Saif Zaib is broken.

Luke Wells has his first wicket after opening the bowling this morning.

Justin Broad is the new batter. Northants need 71 runs to make Lancashire bat again, with four wickets remaining.

  20. wicket

WICKET Guest c Lyth b Coad 20published at 10:41 British Summer Time 6 September 2023

    Derbys 71-2 v Yorks - target 572

Brooke Guest is unable to get on top of a rising delivery from Ben Coad and Adam Lyth takes the catch at second slip before falling over onto his back.

An early breakthrough for Yorkshire and they will be hoping not to have to spend too long in the baking heat to wrap this one up.
