Patient as he was, there were still plenty of classy shots from Steve Smith.

Not least this cover drive from the last ball of the day. Smith will resume tomorrow morning on 95...

Instead, Steve Smith and Travis Head proceeded to put on an unbroken 251-run partnership.

Smith was his usual obdurate self while Head played some breath-taking shots on his way to a sixth Test century...

It's not as many as they have liked after choosing to bowl but India did manage to take three wickets on day one.

Usman Khawaja was caught behind off Mohammed Siraj for a duck, David Warner was strangled down leg off Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami then bowled Marnus Labuschagne after lunch.

It all seemed to be going quite well for them at that stage...

It turned into a day of toil for India and, so far, the two big decisions they made before the start of play have not worked out.

They chose to bowl first with a tinge of green to the surface and clouds overhead. The sun came out by lunch, though, and while the surface has offered a bit for the seamers, it's certainly not been a minefield.

Given all of that, having the number one bowler in the world as an option might have been quite nice. But off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was left out and has a watching brief this week.

Travis Head was just magnificent. He has been in a vein of form over the last two years that's been quite remarkable.

Steve Smith was fairly dogged, perhaps more than we know he can be. He usually bats with a bit more freedom and intent.

From an Australia viewpoint you could not ask for more. Goodness knows what India are thinking. To leave Ashwin out, even with a green tinge on the pitch. Did they really need four seamers?

Mohammed Shami: 1-77 from 20 overs

Mohammed Siraj: 1-67 from 19 overs

Ravindra Jadeja: 0-48 from 14 overs

  8. 'A really good day'published at 18:09 British Summer Time 7 June 2023

Australia batter Steve Smith speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "A really good day in the end. We started quite well. David Warner had good intent, looking nice and sharp. The opening partnership got things started in a difficult little period. Heady and I then just cashed in off the back of it. Travis played with good intent, put the pressure on. I just played second fiddle at the other end and bided my time.

"Travis just goes about his business, sees the ball and hits it. He shifted the momentum. It was a tremendous innings and hope he has a few more runs in him tomorrow.

"There is still enough in the pitch if you bowl in good areas. They were perhaps a bit short in that middle session, but Travis was putting pressure on them so it was a fine line."

  9. 'We've done exceptionally well'published at 18:08 British Summer Time 7 June 2023

Australia's Travis Head, speaking on Sky Sports: "Losing the toss this morning, we've done exceptionally well.

"There's still plenty there as you could see with that second new ball. A lot of hard work to go tomorrow morning but nice to make a really good start.

"I was trying to make sure I was in really good positions today. I got tested through parts of that. I just tried to work through those periods and be adjustable and stay relaxed.

"I always love batting with Steve [Smith]. You need to have plans bowling to him because he's so unique. You say he played second fiddle but I always feel I'm playing second fiddle to him and can go a bit under the radar.

"It was challenging with both new balls. We want to play good positive cricket and put pressure on them tomorrow."

piemontemio: Mmmm. Fast, flat pitches please? Australia 320/3 after 84, England made 524/4 from 82. This could an Ashes out if this world. Or it could backfire catastrophically. But it won't be dull...

  11. Stumps - Aus 327-3published at 85 overs

    Smith 95, Head 146

A fitting end to a day that has belonged to Australia as Steve Smith caresses the ball through the covers for four.

Having been 76-3 after being asked to bat first, Australia will be delighted. Travis Head has made another ton, Steve Smith is five runs away from his hundred and the fourth wicket stand is 251.

Australia have had interesting preparation for this match. Some were playing in the IPL, others were back in the nets in Australia. They had no warm-up games. So they will have been a bit nervous and rusty, but they have dominated this game. It has been a really good day for them.

  13. Aus 320-3published at 84 overs

Steve Smith lets the last ball of Mohammed Siraj's over go through to Srikar Bharat.

We've got three minutes left in the day, time for one more over. Smith will have to wait for his hundred, India have six balls to try and snare a fourth wicket.

  14. Aus 319-3published at 83.2 overs

Back-to-back boundaries for Travis Head to start the over.

The first through the off side and the next driven sumptuously through wide mid on.

Stumps can't come quickly enough for India.

Steve Smith just loves batting. And if he goes to sleep tonight knowing he will be back out in the middle at The Oval tomorrow he will be a very happy man.

  16. Aus 311-3published at 83 overs

Travis Head is beaten twice in the Mohammed Shami over but he finds the boundary fifth ball.

The left-hander runs opens the face and runs the ball down to the vacant deep third boundary.

A single keeps him on strike.

Fenners: Like I said (10:24), you never choose to bowl first at The Oval!!! When will teams ever learn???

  18. Aus 306-3published at 82.2 overs

That is a beauty from Mohammed Shami! Around the wicket to Travis Head, angled in and then good movement away from the left-hander.

Close but still the edge isn't found. If India are going to get a wicket before stumps, it feels far more likely to be Head than Smith.

India have at times looked like getting Travis Head out, but they have never looked like getting Steve Smith out at all.

  20. Aus 306-3published at 82 overs

    Smith 91, Head 129

Lovely shot! Steve Smith moves into the 90s with a crunching drive through the covers for four.

It comes at the end of a decent over from Mohammed Siraj but the breakthrough still eludes India.
