  1. Aus 192-3published at 57 overs

    Smith 36, Head 77

More encouragement for India but still they can't break this stand.

Firstly, Travis Head slashes at a ball that is probably slightly too close to cut but still manages to get it just over gully for four.

A couple of balls later, Mohammed Shami finds Steve Smith's outside edge and the ball drops well short of first slip.

I used to throw thousands of balls at Steve Smith, trying to get him out and it was heartbreaking. You couldn't get him out.

He's uncoachable in the sense that he just figures it all out himself.

  3. Aus 185-3published at 56 overs

Just a single from Umesh Yadav's over.

He's slightly less subtle in his attempt to trap Steve Smith plumb in front. Full, fast, straight and it nearly works.

The batter keeps it out with a leading edge. Encouragement for the bowler but Smith does have the knack of making the opposition think they've nearly got him numerous times. Then before you know it, he's closing in on a double hundred...

How would you try to get Smith out, Justin?

  6. Aus 184-3published at 55 overs

Rohit Sharma has seen enough from Ravidra Jadeja after just one over in the session and Mohammed Shami is on.

The opening bowler drags Steve Smith across his stumps with three lovely out-swingers before firing in the in-swinger.

A classic set-up but Smith is far too savvy for that and defends solidly. Maiden over.

Travis Head is batting so well that one of the great Test batters is playing second fiddle to him at the other end.

  8. Aus 184-3published at 54 overs

Steve Smith gets a single with a pull to fine leg to end Umesh Yadav's over.

It's the short boundary down there so five yards either side and it would've been four. Smith might feel he missed out.

Australia are boringly good at this game.

I'm almost in awe. Never underestimate how hard a shot that is. It's not a half-volley but he's sent it rocketing to the boundary.

  11. Aus 182-3published at 53.1 overs

Four more - and that is some shot from Travis Head!

It's not a bad ball from Umesh Yadav but Head hits it at the top of the bounce and sends it racing between mid off and extra cover to the boundary cushion.

  12. Aus 178-3published at 53 overs

Three singles follow that early boundary.

A boundary that actually brought up the century stand between Travis Head and Steve Smith. They've played well and both look very well set, even after that 20-minute break for tea.

  13. Aus 175-3published at 52.1 overs

    Talking of tucking in...

Ravindra Jadeja floats up a full, wide delivery and Travis Head belts it through the covers four.

  14. Aus 171-3published at 52 overs

    Smith 33, Head 60

Just a leg bye from the over.

Australia will be very happy with how things are going so far. Pat Cummins looks extremely relaxed on the balcony, I can't quite make out what it is he's eating but he seems to be enjoying it!

Thanks, Tom. Top class pedantry all round, I think.

Anyway, the players are back out for what is likely to be a lengthy evening session. Umesh Yadav will bowl the first over after tea.

Will we see (or listen to) some clattering of stumps in the evening session?

If so, it will be the safe hands of Sam Drury at the wheel.

Re Mike Bell, 15:21. I raise your pedantry. When the jeweller made your wife's wedding ring, she was not Mrs Bell. She was Miss Maiden-name. I summise this was not a Bell ring you observed but a maiden ring? Ne c'est pas?

Mike Bell: Re A. N. Other Pedant 15.00. Sorry to be pedantic, but the action of making a bell ring can indeed be observed. I watched the jeweller making the wedding ring for the current Mrs Bell just before we got married 36 years ago. Can't speak for the clattering of stumps.
