  1. 200 runs

    Aus 276-3published at 72.3 overs

It looked like little more than a punch off the back-foot from Travis Head but the ball races away across the square.

Four runs and that brings up the 200 partnership for the fourth wicket.

  2. Aus 271-3published at 72 overs

    Smith 74, Head 111

Loose from Shardul Thakur and Travis Head whips the ball off his pads for four.

You know who might have been quite useful for India about now? Ravichandran Ashwin.

You can see the Indian fielder's shoulders drooping a bit.

  4. Aus 267-3published at 71 overs

Steve Smith takes two from the first ball of the Ravindra Jadeja over but that is the only scoring shot.

The left-arm spinner nearly manages to sneak the ball through Smith's defences but an inside edge is enough to save the batter.

Still no joy for India since just after lunch.

  5. Aus 265-3published at 70 overs

Not for the first time today, India locate Steve Smith's outside edge but are left disappointed as the ball drops short of the slips.

It bounced up to Ajinkya Rahane, he got a hand to it but couldn't prevent it getting past. A single to Smith.

We've got 10 overs until the second new ball is due.

  6. Aus 263-3published at 69 overs

Gorgeous shot. It's a long half-volley from Ravindra Jadeja but it still needs putting away and Steve Smith does so with aplomb.

All along the ground and through the covers to the fence.

  7. Aus 259-3published at 68.3 overs

    Where did that come from!?

From nowhere, Steve Smith comes charging down the pitch to Ravindra Jadeja and lofts the ball over mid off for four.

It wasn't middled but Smith got more than enough of it to clear the fielder.

It's been a while but Ravindra Jadeja is coming back into the attack. Is the left-arm spinner the man to break this fourth-wicket partnership for India?

Don't be dismayed folks. Destructive as Head may be, we've got destruction throughout via Duckett, Brook, Bairstow, Stokes along with a bit more class in Root and Pope. And if Mo gets going too...should be tasty.

  10. Aus 254-3published at 68 overs

The sun is shining and the TV have just shown a row of fans enjoying some ice creams.

Believe it or not, it's clear blue skies in Manchester as well and a 99 wouldn't go amiss here.

It's good that the India supporters have something to enjoy at The Oval because on the pitch Steve Smith is continuing n his merry way with four more whipped through the leg side.

  11. Aus 248-3published at 67 overs

India have had a chat and they've decided it's time for another Shardul Thakur spell.

    He starts with a front-foot no-ball.

  12. drinks break

    Aus 247-3published at 67 overs

Another couple of ugly swipes at short balls from Travis Head but he's still there.

Drinks come on and India will be desperately trying to come up with something to find a wicket.

Probably stick with the short ball and hope Head finally top-edges one...?

Jofra’s elbow, Leach’s back, Australia’s remorseless ability to bludgeon optimism through characters like a revolutionised Travis Head. It’s all the rebalancing of Glenn McGrath stepping on a ball. Can the deities in charge of sport agree that enough’s enough?

That was almost a swat-drive from Travis Head. Utterly dismissed.

  15. Aus 247-3published at 66.1 overs

Travis Head gets up onto his toes, on top of the bounce and powers Mohammed Shami through the covers for another boundary.

He might have looked a bit iffy against the short stuff but he's been pretty imperious against anything else.

  16. Aus 243-3published at 66 overs

Super shot from Steve Smith through backward square leg as Mohammed Siraj attacks from around the wicket.

It really should have been stopped in the deep, though. Australia and Smith don't really need any help scoring runs at the moment but they'll gladly accept that bonus.

Luke Terry: On his day Travis Head is as destructive as any batsman in Test cricket. Shades of Adam Gilchrist.

  18. Aus 238-3published at 65 overs

    Smith 53, Head 100

The short-ball tactic has worked superbly for India. Other than the fact it hasn't brought them a wicket.

They've caused Travis Head real problems, Steve Smith is not getting away from them either but India's frustration will continue until they make the breakthrough.
