It's been like going back in time and watching proper Test cricket. You leave the ball outside the off stump, play the bad ball.

The partnership between Smith and Head has been brilliant. If they'd fallen early, Australia could have been in trouble but they've navigated that session very well.

It's been a really interesting day's cricket so far.

    Head 60, Smith 33

Just a single off Ravindra Jadeja's latest over and that is tea.

I think you can call that a classic session of Test cricket. Great conditions for batting, but just a hint of life in the pitch every so often.

After losing Marnus Labuschagne right after lunch Australia could have unravelled, but Steve Smith and Travis Head have dug in.

Australia lost Marnus Labuschagne right at the start of this session but Travis Head has steadied the ship, scoring a fine half-century.

Here are his best bits - so far.

That wobble seam delivery, pitches and nips away ever so slightly to take the edge. Just drops short.

Gets the edge just short of second slip. False shot and if Gill had been a yard closer, I think he would have taken this.

A lovely ball but it just dropped short.

    Edged...but safe!

A rare false shot from Steve Smith finds the edge but lands just short of second slip.

Steve Smith is visibility angry with himself. He does not do that very often.

    Frustration for India.

Everyone has been trying to figure Steve Smith out his whole career. With a world-class player, you have to have your plans and stick with them for a long time and bore them out.

Batters do make mistakes and they do like feeling bat on ball so you've got to try and get them that way. I'm sure England will come up with good plans.

Don't put him on a pedestal too much but he is a great player and he loves playing in these conditions.

  9. Aus 164-3published at 49 overs

Ravindra Jadeja very nearly snares Travis Head, who takes a giant step forward before playing and missing with a wafty drive that spins away and just misses his off stump.

That's as close as India have come for a long while.

  10. Aus 163-3published at 48 overs

I fear I have inadvertently started something that has spiralled out of control - I'm sure we can all agree that watching people get bowled is fun?

Anyway, focusing back to the action and Umesh Yadav has bowled another maiden, his third of the innings so far.

The action of making a bell ring is called "ringing" the bell, and one can observe this action, but one cannot observe the sound of a bell ringing. Likewise, one cannot observe the clattering of stumps.

The on-screen win predictor has Australia at 71%, though it feels extremely early to be making such predictions.

This is certainly turning into their session, though, as Ravindra Jadeja gets through another over with minimal threat.

Here is the moment Travis Head reached his half-century - his 14th Test fifty for Australia.

Travis Head reached his fifty off 62 balls, with plenty of runs scored square of the wicket.

Ravindra Jadeja has not looked overly threatening so far, but he does managed to extract a bit of spin and extra bounce that lures Steve Smith into a false shot.

After watching the thrilling chaos of 'Bazball' over the last year the pace of this match feels very retro - though no less engaging.

It's been a brilliant knock from Travis Head and a great partnership between these two since Marnus Labuschagne fell just after lunch.

Another Test half-century for Travis Head. Another beautifully-timed shot, using the pace square of the wicket.

    And there it is.

Travis Head punches the ball through point for his ninth four of the innings to bring up his half-century.

He has had to work hard for each of those runs as well.

RE: 13:56 pedantry alert comment. 'Clattering of stumps' can be a sight because you are seeing the process where the sound is created. In the same way, I can see someone ringing the bell at Lords.

That was an up and down over for Travis Head.

A leading edge loops up and is very clearly snaffled by the diving fielder at cover, but an over-pitched delivery is gleefully dispatched wide of mid-off for four.

Head is now just three away from a battling half-century.
