  1. Aus 26-1published at 11 overs

Short from Mohammed Shami and David Warner rocks back to pull through mid-wicket for four.

Top shot from the Australia opener.

The sun is just peaking through the clouds now at The Oval and instantly it feels like a better time to bat.

How long does Rohit Sharma persist with his two opening bowlers? They have bowled a few overs already.

  4. Aus 22-1published at 10 overs

Very good over from Mohammed Siraj. A maiden to Marnus Labuschagne.

The seamer beats the edge twice early in the over - one ball stayed slightly low, the other carried through nicely - before rapping the pads to end the over.

The lbw appeal is turned down and there is no real consideration of a review.

  5. Aus 22-1published at 9 overs

The lacquer is likely starting to come off the new ball now and Mohammed Shami is starting to shape the ball away from the right-hander nicely.

He looks for the magic ball to finish it but rather than getting it to angle in towards middle and leg and hoop away late, the ball just drifts onto the pads and Marnus Labuschagne flicks it to deep square for one.

If India refuse to pick Ashwin please can we borrow him for the Ashes?

  7. Aus 21-1published at 8 overs

    Warner 13, Labuschagne 7

First ball back and Marnus Labuschagne tentatively prods forward and is glad to see an outside edge fall short of third slip.

The right-hander works through mid-wicket for three before David Warner jams the bat down just in time to keep out a Mohammed Shami delivery that stays a touch low.

Good news for Australia fans is that Marnus Labuschagne is going to be able to continue.

The physio checks him over, gives him a painkiller and the gloves go back on.

He seems to be OK but we'll soon see how comfortable he is at the crease.

That almost took off from nowhere.

Labuschagne dropped the bat immediately as if he had been bitten by a snake.

  11. ouch!

    Aus 18-1published at 7.1 overs

Where did that come from!? It's a 90mph delivery from Mohammad Siraj and it leaps up from a length to crash into Marnus Labuschagne's right thumb.

The right-hander instantly drops the bat as he's hit by a jolt of pain and the physio is coming out.

Even though the pitch looks green it has not done as much as most of us were thinking before the start of play.

  13. Aus 18-1published at 7 overs

Good recovery from Rohit Sharma to scoop the ball up one-handed after slipping as he moved to stop Marnus Labuschagne's push into the covers.

There hasn't been a huge amount of movement but Mohammed Shami does get one to nip back and hit Labuschagne just above the pad before the Australia number three drops and runs for a single into the covers.

vineet jacob: Shami has been on the money this morning. No freebies, just the lines and lengths you would want to bowl on such a pitch with a new ball under the cloudy England skies.

  15. Aus 16-1published at 6 overs

David Warner tries to cut the next one, too, but this time it is too close to him and he's well beaten.

A firm shot through mid-on ends the over and more good running from the Aussie pair sees them scurry back for three.

  16. Aus 13-1published at 5.3 overs

A hint of width from Mohammad Siraj and David Warner pounces on it.

He slashes at it and a thick outside edge takes the ball over the slip cordon and away for the first boundary of the match.

  17. Aus 8-1published at 5 overs

    Warner 5, Labuschagne 2

David Warner punches down the ground nicely for three before a bye completes the scoring for the over.

The ball really wobbled after it went past the stumps and Srikar Bharat can't gather it cleanly, it flicks off his fingertips and through his legs.

He's keeping in a Test in England for the first time - and as we've seen plenty of times over the years, it's not easy!

Australia are feeling the pressure a bit here.

  19. Aus 4-1published at 4.1 overs

Mohammed Shami raps David Warner on the pad to start the over and a big appeal goes up.

Mainly from fielders in positions where they couldn't possibly know if it was out.

Bowler, wicketkeeper and slips are far less interested. But it is hard work for the Australia batters at the moment.

This is high intensity Test cricket on a pitch that is offering a little bit.
