  1. Aus 4-1published at 4 overs

Marnus Labuschagne is off the mark first ball with a flick off his hip. Mohammed Shami fumbles at fine leg and that allows Labuschagne to sprint back for a second.

Good ball to finish a wicket-taking over from Mohammad Siraj. Labuschagne makes the decision to leave just in the nick of time.

Khawaja will be thinking, 'Did I really need to play at that ball?' He didn't move his feet, it was nothing shot and has feathered it behind.

He never looked comfortable at the crease. India know how to bowl at him.

    Khawaja c Bharat b Siraj 0 (Aus 2-1)

Edged and gone! Mohammad Siraj makes the early breakthrough.

He angles the ball across the left-hander, not much in the way of foot movement from Usman Khawaja and the slightest push away from his body results in a feather behind.

A brief chat with David Warner ends with Khawaja trudging off and a loud cheer from the India supporters.

What does Ashwin need to do to be picked for the Test side?! Maybe improve his ICC ranking? Take 474 wickets? Get a Test hundred? Have the best overseas record for an Indian spinner? Hang on, he's done all of that, hasn't he?

That's a beauty. Warner was lucky not to nick that.

  6. Aus 2-0published at 3 overs

And they're away! The ball is angling down leg and David Warner is able to clip it through midwicket for two.

Beauty! What a delivery from Mohammed Shami! It's that bit fuller, it nips away slightly and rears up to beat the edge.

Not much Warner could do with that, he'll just be relieved to have missed it.

Can someone tell the Aussies to get a move on... Have they not heard of Bazball?

David Warner and Usman Khawaja, both 36, are the oldest Australia opening partnership since 1926, when Herbie Collins and Warren Bardsley opened the batting at Lord's.

  9. Aus 0-0published at 2 overs

Mohamad Siraj shares the new ball. He's over the wicket to Usman Khawaja.

The Aussie left-hander clips one off his hip but good fielding at square leg means we're still waiting for the first run of the match.

The majority of the crowd are backing India and there are a few oohs and ahs as Siraj beats the edge next ball. No great swing but another maiden.

I can’t help but think that a hard fought World Test Championship is better preparation for The Ashes than a Test against Ireland. That being said, we prepared for 2005 with a Test against Bangladesh and that didn’t end too badly….

That was a very lively and very challenging first over from the wily Mohammed Shami. Every delivery was bang on the money.

  12. Aus 0-0published at 1 over

There are two types of leave - and that, ultimately, is a good one from David Warner!

The ball from Mohammed Shami comes back sharply as the left-hander shoulders arms.

It whistles past the off stump and Srikar Bharat dives to his right behind the stumps to take it one-handed. Maiden to start.

  13. Aus 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Mohammed Shami will bowl the first over.

He starts around the wicket to David Warner and is on the money first up.

Warner is forward to defend and we're off!

Anthems over, a few fireworks go off to momentarily leave a blue haze hanging over the ground.

It soon clears and Rohit Sharma gets his troops in a huddle on the outfield.

We're just a few moments away from the first ball as David Warner strides to the middle, followed by opening partner Usman Khawaja at a more leisurely pace.

Abinash Das: Though Ashwin couldn't make it to the playing XI, his tactical inputs to coach Dravid and his team could be crucial as he is one of the best theorists of the game. He knows how to get the better of the best batters in the opposition camp.

  19. Big day for Davey...published at 10:23 British Summer Time 7 June 2023

David Warner has set out his retirement plans and is aiming for a farewell Test at Sydney Cricket Ground in January.

However, his place at the top of the order for Australia is not as assured as it once was and a couple of low scores here could jeopardise those plans.

He'll face a big test first up this morning against Mohammed Shami et al under cloudy skies at The Oval.
