We're approaching the changing of the guard for both the India and Australia sides. There are a number of players who have not reached the end of the line but they are starting to approach it.

  2. Aus 120-3published at 35 overs

Steve Smith is struggling to get going here - he's 15 from 55 - so has called for another set of gloves. His third of the innings so far by our count.

Let's see if it has a positive impact...

Shardul Thakur has been absolutely fabulous so far, bowling that nagging line around off stump.

  4. Aus 117-3published at 34 overs

Well, as I say that, Shardul Thakur, finds the inside edge of Steve Smith's bat, but ball is chopped safely into the ground.

Thakur then gets the ball to thud into Smith's pad as he shuffled across his stumps, but it was drifting down leg.

Smith is just scratching around a bit for fluency at the moment.

Really intrigued to see how the Aussie middle order of Head/Green/Carey get on this summer. We've all known about the Aussie top order in England for a while now but their middle order is rather inexperienced in this country. Whereas, our middle order is arguably our strength.

  6. Aus 116-2published at 33 overs

A watchful over from Steve Smith, with plenty of shuffling across his stumps and exaggerated arm actions.

There is beautiful sunshine and blue sky above The Oval now.

It looks an absolute picture and - dare I say it - brilliant conditions for batting.

Travis Head has looked in good touch for Australia so far.

Pedantry alert. The clattering of stumps is not the best sight in test cricket (see 13:24). It is a noun, described thus "a continuous rattling sound as of hard objects falling or striking each other". Of the senses it is therefore a sound not a sight.

    Pedant, Wirral

Fair enough but if we're being pedantic, there is a capital T in Test cricket...

That is what Shardul Thakur does really well. He comes in and bowls consistently well in one area.

That went a long way off the pitch and very nearly found the edge of Smith's bat.

  11. Aus 116-3published at 32 overs

Shardul Thakur is on the money first up! That is a brilliant delivery, nipping sharply off the surface and moving away from Steve Smith, who is beaten all ends up.

Head has got away with that. It has gone just wide of gully. That must have bounced on him as he was just trying to it too square...

  13. Aus 115-3published at 31.1 overs

    Let off for Travis Head!

Shardul Thakur, back for his second spell, finds a bit of extra bounce that finds the leading edge, but the ball drop just wide of the diving fielder at gully and Australia run a single.

Rick Harris: Really poor dismissal from Marnus - first ball after lunch, lazy drive on the walk, balance all wrong. What a waste of a grafting hour or so.

The margin of error against Travis Head is so, so small. He's a very dangerous batter.

One thing is for certain: if you don't get him out, he's going to keep scoring runs at a very brisk rate.

  16. Aus 113-3published at 31 overs

Mohammed Shami has his head in his hands, Travis Head seems to be finding the gaps at will here.

He clips one delivery down towards fine leg, before a beautiful, wristy cut through point the next ball to make it back-to-back boundaries.

This is great, aggressive counter-attacking by Head, who has raced to 28 from just 19 balls.

We've seen that the bounce has been a little bit up and down so far from the Pavilion End.

  18. Aus 104-3published at 30 overs

Is that a wince or a smile from Steve Smith? Mohammed Siraj dabbles in a bit of short stuff and twice gets the ball to smash into Smith's thigh.

    The Aussie seems unflustered, though.

I'm a little more refreshed after those two wickets either side of lunch.

The pitch does look like it has dried out now and is a really good batting surface.

Punched beautifully away by Head. That was pretty impressive, he's put that away with some panache.

He did hit it in the air but he hit it with such certainty.
