  1. Ind 22-0published at 3 overs

    Rohit 15, Gill 6

I hope there are no night shift workers trying to sleep in the vicinity of the Oval. If Rohit stays in, you're not going to get a lot of sleep. The India captain guides a full, wide ball from Starc between two fielders and there's no stopping that on this notoriously quick outfield.

Nine from the over. Is this DravBall?

Greg Bossick: I did a final project on Duckworth-Lewis for an Operations Research class. I'm American. This was in Ohio. Confused stares all around. I'm convinced that my professor gave me an A because the math(s) were correct and didn't bother with how it applied to cricket.

  3. Ind 13-0published at 2 overs

    Trail by 456

Pat Cummins is right into the groove at the start of what he will hope is a long summer of bowling. He's up to 89mph already and Rohit almost places a hook straight into the hands of fine leg.

At the end of the over, Shubman Gill drives a sensational drive through the covers to the fence.

Gill is going to be an absolute superstar. He probably already is.

  4. Ind 5-0published at 1 over

    Rohit 5, Gill 0

I have this thing about Rohit Sharma where he, more than anyone else I've seen, looks like a dad filling in in an Under-12s game when he bats.

Even with Mitchell Starc hurling the ball down there he seems to have all of the time in the world to ease forward and defend.

  5. Ind 4-0published at 0.2 overs

    Roared to the fence!

Rohit Sharma is under way second ball with an elegant pull off Mitchell Starc.

Just quickly, here are the final two Australia dismissals before we get under way with this India effort...

  7. Ind 0-0published at 14:20 British Summer Time 8 June 2023

There's a huge cheer as Gill and Rohit Sharma stroll out to the middle.

India need big runs but if you had to pick an international side's top four to do it then this India one with Rohit, Gill, Pujara and Kohli would surely be near the top of the list.

Mitchell Starc is going to start things off with the ball.

Re. all the cricket exam chat: It doesn't stop when you leave school/uni. I've spent the last seven years of my career as an academic publisher of theology books quietly trying to manufacture a situation where I can publish a theology of cricket, just for the joy of a launch at Lord's (geddit?). Ruddy cricket, taking over our lives, eh?

I must admit I'm very excited to see Shubman Gill bat here.

He's already scored hundreds in all three formats for India this year. We've only just got out of May.

That it is a really good effort from the India bowlers. It is still a lot of runs but after what happened on day one it is a good comeback.

But it all boils down to the India batters. They have to bat big and bat long in the first innings.

There is still a bit in the pitch for the seamers but I think it will stay a good surface into day three. So they have to be careful.

    Australia have lost 7-108 today.

India have a lot of batting to do but they have fought back well.

It's a good score but Australia will have wanted more given they were 361-3 at one stage.

    Cummins c Rahane b Siraj 9 (Aus 469)

Pat Cummins clunks a slower ball from Mohammed Siraj straight to the fielder. Australia are all out for 469.

I think Scott Boland will have a role to play in the Ashes. He is a good bowler. Old fashioned, pitches it up. I think he will bowl well in England.

  15. Aus 469-9published at 121 overs

    Cummins 9, Boland 1

Scott Boland gets out the big leave at the end of Jadeja's latest over, lurching forward and lifting his bat away with his big frame. It's another maiden from India's left-arm spinner.

  20. wicket

    Lyon b Siraj 9 (Aus 468-9)

    Comprehensively bowled.

Nathan Lyon has a swing to Mohammed Siraj but completely misses. The ball clatters into off stump and up go the India supporters in the crowd.
