This knock from Alex Carey has all of the danger signs for India. It could take the game away from them.

Mohammed Shami is leaking runs. Alex Carey edges one and Shubman Gill, even with the help of some futuristic sunglasses, cannot stop the ball flashing through the gully for four.
Shami goes in search of a bit of magic later in the over and twice Carey whips it off his toes for two more boundaries.

Chipping in with the cricket and school chat, in a slightly nihilistic rebellion against Covid and how it’d impacted university, I took the plunge and wrote my dissertation on the relationship between cricket and social change: for reference I did a politics and sociology degree! Came off well and left uni feeling glad to have made my journalistic debut in cricket writing:)

Carey 28, Cummins 5
Umesh Yadav is a big, strong fast bowler although I'm not sure he's as quick as he was a few years ago. This is a good over, one ball beating Carey outside off stump.
Indian hands are twice thrown up into the air as Mohammed Shami gets this ball to swing in. Alex Carey and then Pat Cummins get bat onto ball on both occasions however to clip the ball through the leg side.
A handy eight runs from the over.

RE: cricket knowledge helping at school - my entire A-Level sports studies coursework was about analysing different areas of my game, comparisons to elite level players, and highlighting ways of improving my game through copying aspects of the elite players. Got 94% for that coursework.

Carey 22, Cummins 2
Alex Carey wafts bat at three wide balls from Umesh Yadav, like a man tentatively trying to budge a wasp with a broom, and fails to make any meaningful connection.
There are umbrellas up in the stands, protecting from the sun rather than rain.
You've been robbed, Matt.
Umesh Yadav begins proceedings after lunch.

In reference to the Whatsapp message about GCSE exams and cricket. I once used cricket in an essay back in the 90's. They asked for a report on a sporting event. So I said 'England vs Australia, day one, rain stopped play'. Sadly they didn't reward what I considered initiative at the time!

How India would love to have Jasprit Bumrah fit here to blow away the tail.
The players, tummies filled to the brim, are emerging to the field post lunch.
I'm still fascinated by the WhatsApp we received earlier (11:23 BST) about someone writing about cricket bowling actions in their GCSE exams.
There can't be many times cricket knowledge helps you out during school exams.

The second podcast from the How to Win the Ashes series is out.

You may have to bear with me here but that Smith dismissal reminded me a lot of the ball Craig Overton bowled him with in the 2017-18 Ashes.
That was the match Smith said Overton was "slow".
Travis Head getting out to the short ball will not have gone unnoticed to England's bowlers and backroom staff.
Justin Langer brushed off any suggestion there might be an issue for the left-hander there, however.
Steve Smith's dismissal came as a surprise. He managed to play a gentle loosener onto his stumps from Shardul Thakur.
I'm not sure what England can learn from that.
Just joining us? Here are the wickets from the morning session...
Thank you, thank you.
That was good cricket. India have moved back into it but Australia remain well in command.
After all that entertainment it is time for me to take a break. Here to guide you through lunch and the afternoon session is Matthew Henry.

India have got themselves back into the game. But they need to take these last three wickets as quickly as possible.
Mohammed Shami bowls around the wicket and full to Alex Carey, who pushes into the off side for a single.
Three slips come in for Pat Cummins, who is beaten by a beauty by Shami outside his off stump to wrap up a brilliantly entertaining session.
Australia started with intent and looked to go big, with Steve Smith reaching three figures and Travis Head passing 150. But India have pegged them back with four crucial wickets.
That is probably India's first session of the match.
Mohammed Siraj bends his back as he bangs one short in to Pat Cummins. But it is wild and wide, disappearing beyond Srikar Bharat for four byes.
That was an odd over. One more to come before lunch.
