If Australia get these last four wickets pretty quickly, do they really want to bat again? On this pitch, with the ball going up and down, are you risking injury? It will be interesting to see.

    Woooft! Unplayable.

This is lethal bowling from Pat Cummins and Australia.

Shardul Thakur somehow survives the over.

  3. Ind 162-6published at 40.4 overs

This is really tough for Shardul Thakur. He's almost hit again on the glove on the ball after resumption.

You wonder if India getting hammered on a spicy pitch is not good for the future of World Test Championship finals in England.

The magic spray is out. Shardul Thakur is wolfing down a painkiller too.

Thakur is completely squared up by a ball that is pretty full and this inconsistent bounce is getting more and more significant.

Australia's bowlers are just perfect for these conditions.

The physio might as well come out to field at this rate. That has just reared up from nowhere, from an innocuous length really.

    Thakur looks in genuine shock.

    Ind 162-6published at 41.3 overs

I didn't expect to get into a niche Lord of the Rings discussion before 11am but here we are. Surely the gaping weakness was putting a drain, conveniently sized to fit a large explosive device in the wall of your castle. I'm no expert, however.

We're going to have a stoppage here.

Pat Cummins has bowled a ball that has Shardul Thakur writhing in pain like he's been struck by an orc. That's got Thakur right on the forearm and he's thrown the bat away in pain as he played the stroke.

Re the Bharat wicket. Helms deep didn't have a gaping weakness until the Uruk-Hai blew a hole in it with gunpowder. Which is what Boland did to Bharat's defences. So it's a good analogy just not in the way you put it Matthew!

Scott Boland could have had two wickets in his first over. He had to settle for one...

I'm not sure if Boland was trying to do something different there but he very rarely does that.

That might have knocked him off number one on CricViz!

  12. Ind 166-6published at 41 overs

Right on cue after that stat from Andy, Scott Boland gets it all wrong and hurls four byes down the leg side.

He recalibrates his radar a ball later but Shardul Thakur gets one a little edgily away through the gully. Fielders hurl themselves after it but cannot prevent four more.

    Andy Zaltzman
Cricket statistician on Test Match Special

According to CricViz data, Scott Boland has the highest percentage of balls bowled on a good line and length of any Test bowler in the last three years - 56% of his deliveries are bowled in that area.

The follow-on mark is 270, by the way. That's a long way off right now given Australia are already into the bowling all-rounders.

Would Australia even enforce the follow-on?

It would mean putting a lot of work into the legs of their bowlers without a break but it would potentially mean another day on the golf course before the Ashes.

That has absolutely flown off the bat. In Test cricket, you should let that go.

He's pushing at it with hard hands.

Two wicket opportunities already in one over and that's not a good sign for India.

  18. dropped catch

Down! It could have been two in the over for Scott Boland.

Shardul Thakur pokes outside off stump, the ball flies to third slip but Usman Khawaja can only tip it over the bar like Jordan Pickford.

With an exaggerated squat after ball hit stump, KS Bharat has made out that ball shot along the floor. It did not.

Shardul Thakur, India's new man at number eight, defends Boland's relentless line and length.
