Right then, the England players are gathered on the boundary edge which means the New Zealand chase is not far away.

To take you through the start of that chase - they need 292 to win - it's over to Tom Mallows.

Tim Southee removed Jos Buttler in the same over as Liam Livingstone to halt England's momentum.

But a late cameo from David Willey took the home side up to a competitive total...

There was valuable time in the middle for Liam Livingstone.

The big-hitting all-rounder smashed three sixes in a row off Kyle Jamieson before he was caught off a no-ball.

He shrugged that off to bring up his second ODI fifty but was dismissed by Tim Southee soon after...

Joe Root went cheaply but Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler rebuilt for England and put on 88 for the fourth wicket...

The innings started with intrigue over Harry Brook, who is pushing to be added to the World Cup squad.

However, it was Dawid Malan who led an opening stand of 80, scoring a brisk half-century before being dismissed soon after.

Brook fell in the next over for 25.

A pretty steady flow of runs for England throughout that innings with couple of big ones late on.

Will 291 be enough for Jos Buttler's side?

New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra to Sky Sports: "It was three world-class players to dismiss. They are a team of world-class players so it was nice to get the opportunity to bowl at them. They step and hit, and hit down the ground so well, so it was about trying to deny them a little bit.

"The pitch is holding a little bit so that was good for me. It was hard to hit or work around.

"The amount of power they had showed and that is probably around par or just above. We'll want wickets in hand, if we can soak pressure up and have wickets in hand at the innings that'll help."

  8. New Zealand need 292 to winpublished at 16:18 British Summer Time 8 September 2023

Not quite the crash, bang, wallop we've seen from England in white-ball cricket so often in recent years but four half-centuries, of differing speeds, take them up towards 300.

The pitch is certainly not a minefield but it's not the easiest to bat on either.

England will be satisfied with where they've ended up, New Zealand will back themselves to chase it down.

It's all very nicely set up at the halfway stage.

That was a nice way for England to finish. They started with a four and finish with a six.

    Six to finish!

David Willey backs away to give himself a bit of room, Tim Southee follows him but the England batter still manages to swing the ball back down the ground.

The long on fielder is set wide so the ball carries just over the rope.

Decent total for England on a slightly tricky surface.

Bunted back down the ground for four!

Strong shot from David Willey. Not middled but timed well enough to reach that short straight boundary at Cardiff.

England will be pretty happy with the way they are playing. This pitch is not really a brilliant batting surface.

  13. Eng 275-6published at 49 overs

It's fair to saying that the England batters have not always find it easy to time the ball on this surface.

David Willey is through the shot far too early attempting a pull shot and gets hit by Matt Henry's delivery.

Pace off seems to be the way to go. Another slower short ball ends Henry's spell, just four from that over.

    One over to go...

Liam Livingstone departed in the last over but did provide plenty on entertainment while he was in the middle.

Here are his three sixes in a row off Kyle Jamieson...

That shot was really well timed, especially early on in your innings. Good shot to beat the two fielders as well, split them perfectly.

  16. Eng 271-6published at 48 overs

Good shot from David Willey, waiting for the short ball from Tim Southee and nails it through the leg side.

Perfectly into the gap between the two fielders deep on the leg side for four.

Two wickets in the over from Southee.

That has really nipped England's late assault in the bud there.

    Now Jos Buttler goes!

The England skipper aims a big shot over the leg side, mistimes it and the ball goes straight up again.

Lockie Ferguson comes across and takes a simple catch.

Skied and caught at long on.

Liam Livingstone aims another big shot down the ground, is deceived by a slower ball from Tim Southee and hits the ball a long, long way up.

Daryl Mitchell comes in from long on and takes the catch.

We will need some big hitting to score the 34 they need to reach 300. Not impossible.
