That is a shot from Malan that Stokes might be advised to try.

  2. Eng 85-2published at 14 overs

    Malan 41, Stokes 36

While Ben Stokes looks a little scratchy, Dawid Malan looks good at the other end.

He picks up four more with a crunching cut through point to move into the 40s.

Ben Stokes is going very hard. He is going well, it would make more sense if he was only on 15 off 30, but he's not.

This is great intent from Stokes.

  5. Eng 79-2published at 13 overs

Ben Stokes takes 15 off Lockie Ferguson's over, but it hardly feels like vintage Stokes at the moment.

He plays a nice pull into mid-wicket, before a huge leading edge evades point and goes to the boundary.

An uppish drive then just misses mid-off and crawls to the sponge.

In case you're just joining us, here are the wickets of Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root.

Is Root in danger of being dropped, and Malan is a must!

Bairstow. When he's good, he's very good, but when he's bad, he's awful

  8. Eng 64-2published at 12 overs

Another good over from Ben Lister, conceding just one single. He's gone for just three off his first two overs.

Glenn Phillips is also back on the field for the tourists.

Stokes and Malan have bought up their 50 partnership off 8.2 overs.

  10. Eng 63-2published at 11 overs

A double change for New Zealand as Lockie Ferguson, sporting those black boots to match his kit, comes on.

He shows some nifty footwork to hit the stumps at the striker's end as England look to take a quick single, but Ben Stokes is in comfortably.

Stokes picks up another boundary with a beautifully timed flick through mid-wicket.

According to CricViz's captaincy grid, which rates each bowler's ability to bowl at each batter. New Zealand's line-up only has one good option to bowl at both Ben Stokes and Dawid Malan.

It is Glenn Phillips, who has just left the field.

  12. ouch!

    Eng 55-2published at 10 overs

    Malan 34, Stokes 13

    That's going to hurt!

Dawid Malan crashes away a cut shot and Glenn Phillips, fielding at backward point, stops it.

He looks in pain though. I think that either hit his wrist or thumb. He's going to go off for some treatment.

Ben Lister plays for Horsham Cricket Club, he's their overseas player and works behind the bar there.

Left-arm seamer Ben Lister is going to bowl the final over of the powerplay.

Ben Lister can swing the ball both ways, you would think he would get a look in the powerplay.

  16. Eng 53-2published at 9 overs

Good running from England as Dawid Malan drops the ball just off the pitch and Ben Stokes calls him through.

Stokes then plays with soft hands, but it almost gets him in trouble as the ball drops backwards and bounces just over the stumps.

  17. Postpublished at 13:07 British Summer Time 13 September 2023

Ben Stokes and Dawid Malan have played well so far, as England look to recover from 13-2.

  18. Eng 51-2published at 8 overs

More boundaries for England, who are pretty much flying now after the tricky start.

Dawid Malan works through mid-wicket, before threading through the covers again.

He then has a tentative prod at one which swings after it passes the bat and Tom Latham does well to get something on it and stop England picking up any extras.

England's top order has struggled in English conditions during this series, reminding me of the "pre Bazball" Test team. Here's hoping that a change of continent will help their fortunes!

    Eddie F

One of the first thing Stokes did when he came in as Test captain was to scrap the endless rotation. Pick the best team and stick with it. It's what Eoin Morgan did and we were the most exciting batting line-up in the world. So many of our batsmen have played so little ODI cricket over the past few years and it is painfully obvious to see.

  20. Eng 42-2published at 7 overs

    Malan 23, Stokes 11

England are recovering well from those two early wickets.

Ben Stokes picks up another boundary as Trent Boult strays onto his hips, and the England Test captain works it fine.
