Here's how Joe Root's torrid run of form continued.

  3. Eng 36-2published at 6 overs

    More boundaries for England.

Dawid Malan caresses a beautiful drive through the covers, before the left-hander miscues a pull to the fence.

Ben Stokes is shocked by a delivery from Kyle Jamieson and throws his hand off the bat as a leading edge drops harmlessly into the covers. Not sure what surprised him there, there didn't seem to be any extra bounce.

That was a profitable over for England.

  5. Eng 25-2published at 5 overs

    Good over for England.

Ben Stokes clips beautifully to the square-leg boundary, before Dawid Malan climbs into a cut shot and crashes it away.

There might be plenty of times when England have to recover from two early wickets in the World Cup so this is decent exposure.

This, I think, looks pretty close to England's first-team.

  7. Eng 14-2published at 4 overs

England, you feel, will go through a period of rebuilding now.

They take a leg bye as Lockie Ferguson hits Dawid Malan on the pads, before Ben Stokes sees out the rest of the over.

There was a little fiddle at one but Stokes half withdrew the bat as it went across him.

That's come from quite wide, probably five and a half stumps wide. It was just starting to come in, that's why it has found the inside edge with Root looking to drive that.

    Root b Boult 4 (Eng 13-2)

    Joe Root's troubles go on.

Root got off the mark with a crunching drive, but he gets in trouble trying to repeat the shot.

There's a little bit of in-swing from Trent Boult this time and an inside edge from Root cannons into his stumps.

Root has scores of 6, 0 and now 4 in the three matches in this series. Worrying?

That's the eighth time an England No.1 has been out in the first ball of an ODI.

The last time it happened was Jason Roy against Australia at Old Trafford in 2020. That day, Joe Root was out to the second ball of the match.

  12. Eng 9-1published at 2 overs

Kyle Jamieson takes the second new ball for the Kiwis. The tall quick was left out of New Zealand's World Cup squad on Monday as he builds back to full fitness after a back injury.

He starts with a leg-stump half-volley to Dawid Malan, and is duly punished as the England opener whips him to the square-leg fence.

Boult has got Bairstow twice now. New Zealand need to use the ball now while they can and get some wickets. What we learned from Southampton is that you have to keep taking English wickets. They bat so far down that even if you take five or six wickets, they can still hurt you.

This Jason Roy situation is getting ticklish for England. If his back is troubling him, will he get through a potential 11 matches in India, as well as all the air travel?

Also, the way England are setting up, it looks like a straight choice between Roy and Dawid Malan to open. If Malan gets the nod, is the versatility of Harry Brook (who hasn't taken those unexpected chances in this series) a better option to be the batting reserve?

Until now, I was fairly certain Brook would have to make do with a spot as a travelling reserve. Now I'm not so sure.

  15. Eng 3-1published at 1 over

Joe Root is the new batter. He'll want some runs after scores of 6 and 0 in the first two games.

A scrappy first over in truth with a bye and wide following the wicket, before Dawid Malan gets off the mark with an edge into the covers.

A little pick-up. It looks like a good pitch from what we've seen, it's been timed very nicely and it is a good catch. England need their first few batters to get a few runs.

It's an acrobatic catch but it's a ball that has gently swung and has just been nudged. It was a nice catch to the left.

  18. wicket

    Bairstow c Conway b Boult 0 (Eng 0-1)

    GONE FIRST BALL!

It's not a great delivery from Trent Boult, on the pads of Jonny Bairstow, who flicks it away with decent timing.

Devon Conway is lurking though, and flies across to take a smart catch high to his left, from behind square.

Jonny Bairstow has scratched his mark.
