Dawid Malan has scored his fifth century in his 21st innings. Only two players have reached five ODI centuries in fewer - Quinton de Kock and Inzamam-ul-Haq, who both reached the milestone in 19.

  2. drinks break

    Drinks breakpublished at 32 overs

Nothing off that final ball and we reach another drinks break.

England will be chuffed at where they are at during this break, while New Zealand will be wondering just how to get Malan out.

  3. 100 runs

100 for Malanpublished at 31.5 overs

    England 187-3

Malan reaches three figures, a fantastic innings from him!

A two brings it up and rather than resting on any laurels, he and Buttler run hard to add an additional run to the scoreboard.

If there were any doubts on Malan's World Cup place, they have certainly evaporated in the last three matches.

  4. Eng 185-3published at 31.1 overs

A streaky four for Malan, but they all count.

That delivery from Henry finds the outside edge of Malan's bat, Latham can't quite get there and runs away for four, moving Malan onto 99..

    Dawid Malan averages 63 in one-day internationals with a strike-rate of 95.

He has passed 1,000 runs in his 21st innings, the joint-fourth fastest to 1,000 runs in ODIs in terms of innings played.

  6. Eng 181-3published at 31 overs

A good over for England, with runs coming off almost every ball including a four for Buttler.

Malan is closing in on that century, but will he make it over the line.

  7. Postpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 15 September 2023

Harry Brook again struggled in his attempts to fight for a World Cup place, being dismissed on just 10.

  8. Eng 173-3published at 30 overs

At the 30-over mark, England are just shy of scoring at a run-a-ball, with Malan and Buttler both ahead of the strike.

You would feel from this point that barring a collapse, England are going to set New Zealand a very competitive total.

That wasn't a great ball, but Malan had to put it away and he did.

  10. Eng 171-3published at 29.3 overs

    Whacked for four!

Malan's timing looks absolutely spot on, going into the 90s with a cut shot that races towards the boundary.

He narrowly fell short of 100 two days ago at The Oval and will hope to go one further today.

  11. Postpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 15 September 2023

A proper Jos Buttler shot this was, finding his first maximum of the day off Phillips a couple of overs ago.

  12. Eng 164-3published at 29 overs

From one extreme to the other for England. 16 runs off the previous over and just two off Lister's latest and he has looked quite threatening and economical at times.

Matt Henry is back into the attack, having taken the wicket of Bairstow earlier today.

I don't think this is an easy pitch to bat on. A bit two-paced, a little slow. But Dawid Malan has made it look like a beautiful surface.

  14. Eng 162-3published at 28 overs

Just the 16 runs for Buttler in that over, hitting fours with a back-foot drive and then another over Phillips' head, really sticking a foot in and giving Malan someone who looks very comfortable at being in with him.

Malan sits at the other end on 87 but has not seen too much of the strike recently.

  15. 6 runs

    Eng 152-3published at 27.1 overs

It didn't last long at all!

Buttler thumps Phillips' first ball over his head and for six to take himself up to double figures.

It's the kind of shot that will certainly help to see him in.

  16. Eng 146-3published at 27 overs

New Zealand return to pace in the form of Ben Lister and it is rewarded as England take just two singles from it.

A little bit of a malaise in the scoring, but with Buttler and Malan in, it probably won't last too long.

It is so hard to tell what is a good score on this pitch. You see Malan playing on it and you think England need 300. You then see the likes of Root and Bairstow struggling with their timing and you think 260, 270 might be in the game.

  18. Eng 144-3published at 26 overs

    Malan 86, Buttler 3

Spin has limited England's scoring in the last few overs, with five coming off that.

Almost a half chance for New Zealand in there as Buttler uppishly drove one over cover but it landed safely.

  19. Postpublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 15 September 2023

Dawid Malan has taken the game to Jamieson when facing him today, getting plenty of boundaries for it.

  20. Eng 139-3published at 25 overs

Jos Buttler just sees that final ball of the over off, no danger of anything either way for bat or ball.

At halfway, 139 is a respective rate of scoring but England will not want to lose many wickets too soon.
