  1. Eng 96-1published at 18 overs

More tidy bowling from Jamieson, with England scoring just three runs from it.

In the penultimate ball of that over, Root went for the reverse ramp but did not connect the ball, with that shot not getting much success today compared to his usually high success rate with it.

Ravindra, despite struggling in the previous over, remains in to bowl.

A concern for New Zealand, with Tim Southee seemingly injuring his hand when dropping Root a few overs ago...

Rachin Ravindra's not found any rhythm today. He's just trying to float it there which is a clear sign that it's not really going your way.

  4. Eng 93-1published at 17 overs

A good over for England, who score 12 off Ravindra, 10 of which coming from Root's two boundaries.

Kyle Jamieson continues at the other end, with the tall seamer looking good so far.

  5. 6 runs

    Eng 91-1published at 16.3 overs

    That's more like it!

Root attacks Ravindra again, this time slog-sweeping, and it just about clears the boundary for six.

Ben Stokes had a scratchy start at The Oval on Wednesday, look at how that ended up!

  6. Eng 85-1published at 16.1 overs

Not a ball that Ravindra will want to see back all that often, a pretty grim looking full toss is dispatched away by Root for four.

Will that be the catalyst for Root?

    Thanks, Tom.

Dawid Malan looks in great touch and this ODI series has come at the perfect time for him.

Joe Root meanwhile looks like he is starting to slowly get going after a scratchy start and just generally, a string of poor scores for him.

As the players have a well-deserved drink it is also time for me to take a break. I will leave you in the safe hands of Jonty Colman.

  9. drinks break

    Eng 81-1published at 16 overs

Kyle Jamieson has beaten Dawid Malan's outside edge a couple of times with that tricky angle from around the wicket. He has toiled hard with little reward so far.

Two runs to the score lifts England to 81-1 as we pause for drinks.

Dawid Malan has definitely closed down those conversations ahead of the World Cup.

There were some question marks about Dawid Malan's place in England's World Cup squad, but he's firmly answered that.

  12. 50 runs

50 for Dawid Malanpublished at 15.3 overs

A push to mid-off brings Dawid Malan a run-a-ball 50. He has certainly his staked his claim for a starting spot at the World Cup.

  13. How's stat?!published at 13:40 British Summer Time 15 September 2023

This is Joe Root's first score of double figures in ODI cricket for five matches. It had been his worst career run of single figure scores in ODI cricket.

  14. Eng 79-1published at 15 overs

Will Joe Root make the most of those two drops?

Long hop deliveries like that from new bowler Rachin Ravindra will help, with Root smashing it through mid-wicket for four.

A single brings Dawid Malan on strike, who scoops the ball away for two before a single with the last ball moves him on to 49.

Ben Lister has been bowling beautifully. He's getting the ball to swing around corners and finding a bit off the seam.

  16. dropped catch

Root dropped on eightpublished at 14 overs

    Joe Root is dropped again!

It is a thick edge that flies towards Tim Southee at wide first slip. He dives two-handed to his right but the ball smacks into the lower part of his right thumb and falls to the floor.

That looked painful, it is his bowling hand too. Southee grimaces as he goes straight off the field for a bit of treatment.

Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

It's been a good start by Kyle Jamieson. He's just probing away at Dawid Malan's off stump, attempting to draw him forward. He's not allowing him to play his favourite shots. New Zealand will be delighted to have him back in their contingent. They are getting overs in his legs and ensuring he's on track for the World Cup.

  18. Eng 62-1published at 13 overs

Kyle Jamieson bowls a a maiden for New Zealand. His height bringing a bit of extra pace and bounce that is troubling the England batters.

He is 0-3 from his two overs so far.

Finn Allen is the sub fielder by the way, who is on for Daryl Mitchell after he injured his hand taking this catch to dismiss Jonny Bairstow.

  20. dropped catch

Root dropped on sevenpublished at 11.4 overs

    Joe Root is put down!

It is another attempted cut but he is again cramped for room and he can only guide the ball to a diving Finn Allen at slip, but he puts it down diving full stretch to his right.
