  1. Eng 59-1published at 11 overs

Another change of bowling for New Zealand as Kyle Jamieson comes steaming in.

Joe Root attempts a late cut but it cramped for room and can only chop the ball down to first slip on the bounce.

Root still scratching around a bit.

  2. Eng 56-1published at 10 overs

Change of bowling as left-armer Ben Lister enters the attack.

A leading edge from Joe Root flies just wide of first slip, who was diving at full stretch, to bring a single.

Dawid Malan then flicks an in-swinger off his pads and just wide of short fine leg for four.

The scorebook will say eight off the over, but Lister could have had one or two wickets there with a bit more luck.

  3. Eng 48-1published at 9 overs

Kyle Jamieson saves a certain four as he cuts off a straight drive from Dawid Malan at mid-off.

That brings Joe Root on strike and he misses another Root-scoop. Root is not looking convincing at all so far.

A clip off the pads brings a welcome single to move him on to two from 11 balls.

  4. Eng 45-1published at 8 overs

Dawid Malan is in the mood - he has just cracked Tim Southee for three successive boundaries!

The first is hammered through backward point, the next pulled wide of short fine leg and the third crashed through the covers.

Malan has raced to 29 from 25 balls.

Joe Root is rarely out of form, even if he’s out of runs. His lean streak only strengthens my conviction that he’ll be our top runscorer at the World Cup. Remember this message when he is.

I was almost going to say and dare I say it, Root looks a bit out form.

  7. Eng 33-1published at 7 overs

A wafty drive from Dawid Malan fliues just wide of a diving gully and England can scamper through for a single.

Joe Root, yet to get off the mark, then goes for the Root-scoop but gets nothing on the ball - or did he?

Matt Henry appeals for the caught behind but the umpire again turns down the appeal, with replays showing it flicked the pad on the way through.

Not the most convincing start form Root, though.

We saw a couple of textbook shots from Dawid Malan earlier that flew to the rope.

  9. Eng 32-1published at 6 overs

Huge appeal from Tim Southee as an in-swinger smacks into Dawid Malan's pads deep in his crease.

Umpire not interested and New Zealand decline the appeal - and we know why after the replay, which showed a thick inside edge.

The one thing about Joe Root, I know he loves batting in India. Playing in a World Cup as well, he will absolutely love it.

Speaking of Joe Root, here he is.

It's a nice ball from Henry, getting the ball to hold up the slope. Bairstow just plays a straight prod. To get two hands on it that close to his ankle is such a hard skill as a slip fielder. It won't look that impressive on screen but it's a brilliant catch.

That's a beautiful catch. It was taken brilliantly at slip by Mitchell, who is a terrific fielder. That is as good of a slip catch as you will see.

Both hands under the ball. Fantastic catch!

Jonny Bairstow never really got going and had a few let offs before then.

  16. Umpire reviewpublished at 4.4 overs

Jonny Bairstow has been brilliantly taken by Daryl Mitchell at first slip.

    Or was he?

Bairstow isn't going anywhere. The umpires send it upstairs to check he did not ground the ball.

Seven of last eight ODIs at Lord's, the team batting first has won. The only exception was the World Cup final, which ended as a tie. In four of the last five ODIs at Lord's, the team batting first has ended up with a first innings score in the 240s, including the 2019 World Cup final.

  18. Eng 26-0published at 4 overs

Jonny Bairstow is having a go at anything pitched up, though he has a touch of fortune again as a thick edge flies over slip.

No such trouble for Dawid Malan, thogh, as clips a swinging delivery from Tim Southee off his pads through mid-wicket for another boundary.

  19. Postpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 15 September 2023

Jonny Bairstow is certainly setting the tone up top for England today.

Bairstow's previous two innings saw him score just six and then nought. That is only the second time in his ODI career where he has made back-to-back single figure scores.
