As a batter you need to read conditions really early, this is not a pitch where you can just plant your foot and go through the ball. This is a pitch where you need to give yourselves a little bit more time.

The Netherlands have kept the shackles on Pakistan so far.

That is a good sharp catch. The ball didn't quite come onto the bat and Fakhar was early on the shot.

    Fakhar c & b Van Beek 12 (Pak 15-1)

Superb return catch from Logan van Beek!

Three dots to start the over lead to Fakhar Zaman trying to force the issue.

He attempts to punch the ball down the ground but it's not quite there for the shot and he chips it back to the bowler off the inside half of the bat.

  4. Pak 15-0published at 3 overs

Very good first five again from Aryan Dutt.

The off-spinner rips one past Imam-ul-Haq's outside edge this time.

Again, though, the last delivery is a bit loose but this time it only costs him two as Imam flicks a leg-side delivery to deep backward square.

I first saw Logan van Beek in the Candian T20 league and he was very, very impressive. He's been really good in the build up to this tournament too.

He is searching for swing but there isn't really any at the moment. It will be quite humid in Hyderabad so it won't be easy to find swing.

  6. Pak 13-0published at 2 overs

Fakhar Zaman gets his third boundary with a well-timed clip through mid-wicket as Logan van Beek overpitches.

Three dot balls end the over with Van Beek finding some decent lateral movement off the seam.

  7. Pak 9-0published at 1.2 overs

Logan van Beek starts from the other end and finds the leading edge of Fakhar Zaman as the opener tries to whip the ball to leg.

The ball loops up and over the fielders in the covers and runs away on this lightning outfield.

It's streaky but it's four more for Fakhar.

When the Netherlands played Pakistan earlier in the year in Rotterdam Aryan Dutt got Babar Azam out twice. Not a bad player to get!

That spoils the over for Dutt. It was a little bit short and a little bit predictable.

  10. Pak 4-0published at 1 over

After five good balls from Aryan Dutt, he gives Fakhar Zaman a bit of a freebie.

Short, wide and Fakhar waits for it before putting the late cut away for four.

Pakistan lost both of their warm-up games, but the Netherlands saw both of theirs washed out.

    Beauty to start!

Turn and bounce Aryan Dutt to take the ball away from the left-handed Fakhar Zaman.

    Just past the outside edge.

Netherlands are going to start with spin as Aryan Dutt prepares to bowl the first over.

Fakhar Zaman is on strike for Pakistan.

I said the teams came out early so we've got a slight delay while we wait for the official start time...

The defending champs getting knocked over in the first game set the tone for the tournament.

I am sat here like a proud parent at the moment. They have come a long way.

Them being the 10th team was unexpected and they did brilliantly to qualify. I don't know what to expect from them.

Them fielding first is about them feeling their way into the tournament. They definitely have the ability to surprise a few teams in this tournament.

Netherlands are back in a 50-over World Cup for the first time since 2011.

Ahead of their first game, all-rounder Bas de Leede and father Tim give the inside view on Dutch cricket's reboot from bad tracksuits, getting out Sachin Tendulkar and 'Basball'.

The teams are out nice and early in Hyderabad for the national anthems.

Meanwhile, the ball is brought out onto the field by what a colleague of mine describes pretty accurately as a "miniature logistics lorry" - interesting choice.

"We will try our best. We're looking forward to the match. We're aiming to 290 or 300-plus."

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards: "It looks like a pretty good wicket and it should hold together all day but under lights it might get a little bit easier.

"It is just about trying to win this game of cricket. We've played against Pakistan a lot in the last couple of years and looking forward to playing them again.

"It is about adjusting earlier and see how the pitch plays. We've got some quality pacers and spinners, that can bowl in the powerplay."

  20. Netherlands win the toss and bowlpublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 6 October 2023

Scott Edwards calls right at the toss and Netherlands are going to chase.

It's a different venue, of course, but based on how conditions improved for batting under lights in yesterday's game, I fancy winning the toss and bowling first could become the default option in this tournament.
