  1. Match to begin at 11:30 BSTpublished at 11:16 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

Hello, we've got a start time.

We'll get underway at 11:30 BST, with the match cut down to 43 overs a side.

Dare I say it, but we've now got enough sunshine for the floodlights to be casting shadows on the outfield. It's quite the turnaround in Dharamsala.

  2. Plastic Sheeting II: The Reckoningpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

    They're coming off!

We've suddenly cut to a different camera and it looks considerably brighter, while the ground staff are hauling off their great rippling of sheets of tarpaulin.

    Promising signs...

The Netherlands are one of only two winless teams in the tournament, but until yesterday five-time champions Australia were also without a victory.

They survived a few nervy moments against Sri Lanka, but ultimately came out as comfortable winners.

Why not enjoy some of the highlights while we wait?

Prior to England's game in Dharamsala, captain Jos Buttler voiced concerns about the state of the outfield.

"You are going to have to be a little bit smart as fielders and a little bit careful, which isn't something you want to be when you are playing for your country," Buttler told BBC Sport.

"You want to dive around and save every single run."

This part of the world will be no stranger to rain, but a steady downpour is unlikely to have improved conditions in the outlying areas of the ground.

We're seeing of shots of school children desperately sheltering under their four and six signs. The rain is getting heavier and those bits of cardboard aren't going to last long.

Our start is officially delayed, beyond that it's a case of wait and see.

I'm afraid they're back on folks. It's looking very dark in Dharamsala and there's drops of rain on the camera lens.

Once we get past 10:30 BST we start losing overs from the match. There's not a lot of news emanating from the ground, but when we know, you'll know.

A change for each side - South Africa bring in seamer Gerald Coetzee for spinner Tabraiz Shamsi, while the Netherlands drop Ryan Klein for fellow seamer Logan van Beek.

Netherlands captain Scott Edwards: "We would have had a bowl as well but we're just as happy to have a bat first.

"The batting unit has got a little bit of work to do and hopefully we can show that today.

"We want to stick to our blueprint. We know when we're playing well. There are a few areas we need to tidy up, but it is just about adjusting to conditions."

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma: "Looking at overhead conditions it might swing a bit so we would like to exploit that. It is quite a small ground as well so it might be difficult to defend.

"We have been batting first for quite a while but the bowling is where the challenge will be, we have to start well, be nice and clinical and the batters do what they have to do.

"We will take the confidence. The belief is growing amongst the group. We have been playing some good cricket for a while so we have to stay consistent and replicate the performances we have been showing at this World Cup."

    A toss, a surprise toss!

Without warning, the captains are out in the middle.

South Africa's Temba Bavuma calls correctly and has decided to bowl first.

There has been a change in Netherlands cricket, helped by the greater finances involved when qualifying for these events and more exposure to other leagues.

It means there is a level of quality that splits over the 15 players in their squad, whereas in the past there were two or three players that could compete at this level and the others were just there for the ride.

David Warner gave the ground staff a hand with the covers yesterday. So if any players fancy lending a hand as a form of warm-up?

Although I have to say, it does look like it's getting darker again in Dharamsala. Remember - we're up in the mountains in the north of the country - the BBC weather forecast is offering a high of seven degrees Celsius for the rest of the day.

A much of the cricket live texter's role is to tell the world about the movements of large sheets of plastic.

It's an honour and a privilege to tell you that several have been moved off the pitch.

Umpires Michael Gough and Richard Kettleborough are out there in their fetching pink jackets, chatting with some of the groundstaff.

Hopefully we'll get news on the toss soon.

In T20s you can win a game with two players performing, but you need five or six to perform in 50-over cricket to win, which is why it is such an interesting format.

But the Netherlands have enough quality to upset any side in the competition. They are not just here to make up the numbers. They are here as one of the top ten sides in the world.

Some of South Africa's exits from World Cups have been comical. Ao how would you change it? Do you ignore the past or do you confront it?

I think a big advantage is that a lot of their players play in Indian conditions a lot, so it is not foreign for them. And at this time of year Indian batting conditions are brilliant. The outfields are fast, the wickets are true and the power these guys have means they they can hit it way into the stands.

So if you are a South Africa supporter you should be excited. I think South Africa and New Zealand are the only teams that can beat India.

The way South Africa started this tournament has been phenomenal. They have made a real statement and will try to put a statement out today.

The fact their batters are strong against spin makes a massive difference in India. They are playing in conditions which favour their batters and their pace attack is one of the best in the world.

  17. Toss delayedpublished at 09:24 British Summer Time 17 October 2023

The first news to bring you from Dharamsala is that the surrounding mountains are shrouded in cloud the umbrellas are up. The toss has been delayed for the time being.

The players are still warming up so evidently there's still some hope in the dressing rooms that we can get some play.

In case you were wondering, it's South Africa who are the unbeaten side - triumphing over Sri Lanka, where they racked up a few tournament records, and Australia.

Meanwhile the Netherlands have been defeated by Pakistan and New Zealand. The qualifiers were always going to be up against it, but they do have a history of pulling off shocks in ICC tournaments.
