That is where Woakes has tended to be expensive. It's not a terrible ball, it's a bit short and a bit wide. When you are struggling, that goes for four.

  2. Ind 4-0published at 1.3 overs

The classy Shubman Gill gets India off the mark in style.

An elegant back foot punch through the covers brings him four off Chris Woakes.

A good start from Willey, the seam is coming down a bit scrambled there, whether he was looking to get Rohit Sharma playing across, Rohit will be on guard for the one that comes back.

Are England hoping David Willey does his best Shaheen Afridi impression here by giving him the first over?

    A maiden!

Lovely start from David Willey. One for England's highlights reel, that.

The ground is like a big bowl and the atmosphere bellows around the ground, it is an atmosphere that can get on top of you.

  8. Ind 0-0published at 0.1 overs

A hint of swing, play and a miss from Rohit Sharma and a bit of an 'ooooh' from Jos Buttler from behind the stumps.

Rohit Sharma, in the form of his life, is on strike to David Willey.

Shubman Gill is at the other end, and we're ready to go.

I think Matthew Mott has a very interesting set of decisions to make at the end of this tournament. In the build-up, he said he's 12 months to plan for this but it's gone the way he has. He and Jos Buttler have conversations to be had over the direction of this team, I am sure there will be discussions with Rob Key and a few PowerPoint presentations will be made.

One of the kids carrying these massive flags has just fallen over as it was unfurled and as a result was dragged across the outfield.

That would absolutely be the most 'England' thing that could happen.

The teams are just going through the pre-match formalities of carrying the giant flags, the World Cup trophy is paraded out to the middle and the match ball is delivered on its cute little truck.

    Just the anthems to go.

Anyone else feeling like England (abject, lying in a crumpled heap) are almost destined to beat India (flying, practically unbeatable, pretty much guaranteed to win the whole thing) today? No? Anyone?

There’s already more Blue than a teenager’s bedroom in 2001 here. It feels like every one of those India fans in their Virat Kohli replica shirts has a horn. It’s very loud.

  16. 'We wanted to bat first'published at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

India captain Rohit Sharma: "We wanted to bat first, it's a good opportunity for us, it looks like a good pitch. We don't mind batting first.

Testing yourself in different scenarios?: "It's quite important to think like that, but also important to play well, get those two points, whatever it takes. We hope to continue where we left in the last week.

Happy to have had a week off or do you wish it was shorter?: "Sometimes you don't want a break, but those first five games were hectic so it was nice to have one. It's nice to come out and get back to basics.

Team news?: "We are going with the same team that played the last game."

  17. Postpublished at 08:08 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

England captain Jos Buttler: "It's more of a gut decision. We need to focus on the cricket that we know we can play, and in the way we want to play.

"We will bring our best and make the most of the occasion. Playing against India in a World Cup in front of a packed crowd is always something special.

"We haven't done ourselves justice with our performances so far. But I think the longer that goes on, the closer you are to coming out the other side and we want to put on a show, play for some pride."

Jos Buttler gets the call right and chooses to bowl. He has also gone for an unchanged team, which is interesting.

Let's hope they have a little more luck with bowling first here, than they did against South Africa.
