    Gurbaz b Madushanka 0 (Afg 0-1)

Middle stump out of the ground! What a start for Sri Lanka!

It's a superb delivery from Dilshan Madushanka.

The left-armer gets the ball to swing back in to the right-handed Rahmanullah Gurbaz, it flicks off his back leg and cannons into middle.

Stump uprooted as the flashing zing bails jump up.

That brings us up to date just in time for the start of the Afghanistan innings.

The Sri Lanka players are gathered on the boundary edge, the Afghanistan openers are loitering a few yards away from them.

Everyone is ready to go and with the umpires now striding out to the middle, the restart is just a few moments away.

Wickets kept falling at regular intervals until a handy partnership between Angelo Mathews and Maheesh Theekshana took Sri Lanka past 200.

However, the impressive Fazal Farooqi ended that with an inch-perfect yorker and Afghanistan proceeded to wrap up the innings with three balls to spare...

It was a fairly even start in Pune with Afghanistan removing Dimuth Karunaratne early and then denying Pathum Nissanka a fifth half-century on the trot at this World Cup.

However, a third-wicket stand between Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama put Sri Lanka in a promising position...

This pitch is pretty good for batting so to restrict Sri Lanka to 241 is good. The only thing is the depth of the Afghanistan batting line-up is not as strong as the other teams so they will be hoping their top order does the bulk of the work.

  8. 'A great achievement'published at 12:31 Greenwich Mean Time 30 October 2023

Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, who is playing his 100th ODI: "It is a great achievement, first of all to play for my country and then to get to 100 ODIs is huge for me and a proud day. I have played all the games since I debuted and hopefully we can make this 100th game really special and win the game.

"The wicket is good for batting. We bowled really well. They started well but we bowled really well and assessed the conditions well. We wanted to restrict them to 250 and now it is just about being positive.

"We were expecting that from the pitch based on training sessions and from the India-Bangladesh game. There is lots of dew in the night time and we had that in mind because having 30 overs of spin would have taken us away from the game."

I think runs on the board are so important. But with Afghanistan's top order and some of their recent performances I would not put it out of reach for them.

They will rely heavily on their top four so if two or three go early they will be chasing the game. But if they start well and set a platform then who knows.

But at the moment if I was sticking my neck out I'd say having runs on the board for Sri Lanka is the better option.

    Breaking

Sri Lanka will be disappointed having looked well set at 134-2 but that partnership between Angelo Mathews and Maheesh Theekshana has at least given them a total to defend.

Afghanistan will back themselves to get these runs and claim a third win of the tournament.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 49.3 overs

Rajitha run out (Gurbaz) 5 (SL 241 all out)

    No mistake this time!

Naveen-ul-Haq strays down leg with a slower ball and Kasun Rajitha tries to pinch the strike back.

However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz collects the ball and has time to gather himself before throwing down the stumps.

A superb effort from Afghanistan in the field.

  12. SL 240-9published at 49.3 overs

Big run out chance as Dilshan Madushanka drills the ball back to Naveen-ul-Haq and inexplicably sets off for a single.

Naveen scoops the ball up, has all three stumps to aim at but misses.

Any runs from here will be a bonus for Sri Lanka given they have numbers 10 and 11 out there.

  14. SL 239-9published at 49 overs

Full toss to finish from Fazal Farooqi and number 11 Dilshan Madushanka swings wildly at it.

He misses, the ball just misses the stumps and the umpires decide it was low enough to avoid being called a no-ball.

Farooqi ends with exceptional figures of 4-34. Top stuff from the left-arm seamer.

  16. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 48.3 overs

    Mathews c Nabi b Farooqi 23 (SL 239-9)

Superb catch at long on from Mohammad Nabi.

Angelo Mathews launches the ball back down the ground, it hangs in the air for some time but when he eventually drops, Nabi is there.

He takes the catch millimetres from the boundary sponge and shows great balance to stay inside it.

Big wicket for Afghanistan, it could save them 15-20 runs.

You should never underestimate the final two overs in an innings.

Afghanistan do not want to congratulate themselves just yet as this 238 could easily turn into 260.

Slower ball. In the slot. Pumped.

Sums up Naveen's performance with the ball today.

  19. SL 238-8published at 48 overs

Angelo Mathews has to wait for the last ball of the over to get back on strike but he makes it count when he does.

Too full from Naveen-ul-Haq and Mathews clubs it through mid-on for four.

The bad news for Sri Lanka is Kasun Rajitha, rather than Mathews, will be on strike to start the next.

  20. SL 231-8published at 47.2 overs

Angelo Mathews does lose the strike early in the over.

He clips the ball to leg, wants to but has to settle for a single. Over to new batter Kasun Rajitha...
