All those saying "he could have batted without a helmet" it's absolutely his right to wear a helmet, are we trying to improve safety or not? To time someone out for a safety equipment failure is embarrassing and sends completely the wrong message.

Shakib Al Hasan has been right at the heart of this. He was the captain who had to decide whether to uphold the appeal.

True Stephen, but Mark Boucher suffered his career-ending eye injury when standing up to a spinner, so it is not without risk.

Speaking of Shakib Al Hasan, he brings himself back into the attack. Four singles come off it, which I think Bangladesh will be happy with at this stage of the game.

The next ball was from Shakib, Lawrence. People have been facing bowlers like him without helmets on for decades.

Asalanka is so strong off the hip with the swivel pull shots and he's helped that over fine leg into the crowd.

    Hello.

Lift off for Charith Asalanka as he swivels and pulls a slower short ball from Tanzim Hasan over fine leg for six.

Not the best ball from Tanzim and it was punished.

Good bumper from Tanzim. He's been a little bit expensive but what he's lacked for in consistency, he's made up for with aggression.

Theekshana has hurt himself. That's caught him on the right thumb.

He's got to bowl later so that's the last thing he needs.

Ouch. That looks painful for Maheesh Theekshana.

It is another well-directed bouncer from Tanzim Hasan that lures Theekshana into the pull, but the ball smacks right into his thumb and flies away fine for four.

The physio runs out to take a look.

Stuart Broad will be fuming with the Matthews dismissal being the paragon of the spirit of cricket

Sometimes when you feel that you've been on the wrong end of a decision, your game can go up a notch with your focus sharpened.

I think the safety issue will definitely be central to Sri Lanka's case and why they feel so aggrieved.

Meanwhile, Maheesh Theekshana has a big smile on his face as he finally gets a boundary, though there is a touch of fortune about it as the ball came right off the toe-end of the bat.

A better shot guided down to deep third then brings two.

I find the comments to the effect that Matthews should have just faced a few balls without a helmet bizarre, surely helmet-wearing is exactly the kind of behaviour we want to encourage? We wouldn’t tell a tour cyclist to just get on and ride the first few 20 miles without a helmet because the racing hadn’t properly started yet…

Dhananjaya de Silva was looking in good touch before he was tempted forward by Mehidy Hasan and stumped - eventually - by Mushfiqur Rahim.

Can Bangladesh get a slip in place and go for the jugular to try and bowl Sri Lanka out rather than just restrict the runs?

  17. SL 229-6published at 42 overs

Great over from Tanzim Hasan. He is hitting a teasing line and length just outside off stump, with Maheesh Theekshana having a few swings and misses.

Sri Lanka pinch a single off the ball but I don't think Bangladesh will mind as that means Theekshana, who is on four from 13 balls, will be on strike next up

Have we learned nothing from the Phillip Hughes and Mark Boucher incidents? On the one hand, ICC and its members go on about the importance of wearing a helmet, having a concussion check, wearing a neck guard etc. On the other hand, allow for a batsman to be given out when his helmet strap breaks and he asks for a replacement? Doesn't make any sense. This isn't about the spirit of the game, it's common sense or the lack of it, in this case.

With all the commotion, the unrest, the unknown, everything that is going on around him, Asalanka is playing so well.

It's imperative that he keeps marching on his merry way.

I've just seen another shot of the Sri Lanka fan in the lion costume, His head is absolutely massive. You won't see a thing if you're sat behind him.

Just three singles from Taskin Ahmed's latest over. He has been very tidy so far, with figures of 1-33 from nine.
