It may come down to a "spirit of the game" question but I think this lets the umpires of the hook. Technology can tell us whether a dismissal is out, the ball has crossed the boundary or a no ball bowled. The law is there to stop batting teams wasting time, which Matthew's wasn't doing. This means the value of the umpires is in managing these grey areas. If umpires aren't going to apply some human sense to these situations, what is the point of them?

Cut nicely by Asalanka. A terrific shot, just the balance and the weight transfer onto the back foot then pow!

    He's plundering runs here.

  3. SL 223-6published at 40 overs

Another brilliant cut shot from Charith Asalanka as he perfectly pierces the gap backward of square and sends the ball fizzing to the rope.

10 overs to go and Sri Lanka have a decent platform to step things up here.

The way Bangladesh have batted in this World Cup, I think they'll find a 280 score intimidating.

  5. SL 216-6published at 39 overs

Maheesh Theekshana is the new batter. He just needs to play the support role as Charith Asalanka is looking in great touch, he is 71 from 82 balls.

Mathews was ready to face a ball within the two minutes when his helmet strap broke. Does this blameless act merit him then having to compromise his own safety by batting with a faulty helmet, on pain of being timed out? It seems like the umpires have misinterpreted the laws here.

I think you're being very generous to Mushfiqur. He should have taken it cleanly the first time.

Dhananjaya de Silva did poorly not to keep his eye on it and get back.

    Good handy work from Mushfiqur.

That partnership was just starting to look dangerous.

Mushfiqur lifted a stump out of the ground to be sure, at which stage the batter was still a long way out of his ground.

He did. Mushfiqur Rahim fumbled the ball but managed to grab at the second attempt and whip off the bails.

A big wicket for Bangladesh as Dhananjaya de Silva was just getting going.

This could be another interesting one. Has Miraz got his man?

Dhananjaya de Silva was down the pitch by some distance.

  12. Umpire reviewpublished at 37.5 overs

Now, Bangladesh think they have Dhananjaya de Silva stumped after missing the ball as he dances down the pitch.

The umpire's send it upstairs as they want to check wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim knocked the bails off with the ball in his gloves.

This will forever be a story because it is the first time an international batter has been timed out.

That in itself is a piece of history. But unwanted history.

Sri Lanka have certainly not slowed down. It is the kind of incident that can take your innings off track but they've battled on and looked good.

Sri Lanka will be pretty pleased with where they're at.

Their top order got starts and now Asalanka and De Silva are doing a good job to set them up for the back end of the innings.

Shot! Dhananjaya de Silva has absolutely nailed the ball over mid-wicket for a hefty six off Shakib Al Hasan.

De Silva has raced onto 30 from 21 balls.

Personally I think there is too much talk of the ‘spirit of the game’. If it’s in the rules it’s in the rules and if something is such an affront to the game, they should take it out of the rules.

It's not in Bangladesh's nature to go against the spirit of cricket. In a recent series against New Zealand, Ish Sodhi was Mankaded and the captain withdrew the appeal.

That was Liton Das, not Shakib Al Hasan.

I think it's entirely fair for Shakib to ask the question but it then becomes whether Mathews was ready to face the first ball.

It then becomes a question for the umpires rather than Shakib.

Another tidy over from Mehidy Hasan, just the two singles of it.

All this Mathews hoo-ha has distracted us from what we thought would be the biggest issue of the day - the Dehli smog.

We have seen a few shots of the city smothered in smoke in the distance, but the players do not seem adversely affected by the conditions.

What just happened here is much worse than the Bairstow incident. Matthews essentially penalised for putting his safety first. Disgraceful dismissal.
