Ideally Pakistan would qualify if they thrashed England regardless of whether they bat first or second. But apparently it would be much easier for them if they bat first. Surely something wrong there - do the net run rate rules need to be looked at?

There's a real haze hanging over the crowd at Eden Gardens. Those striking brutalist pylon floodlights dominate the skyline.

Haris Rauf, bowling round the wicket, hits Ben Stokes high on the pad with his second ball and spins on his heels to offer a vociferous appeal but Babar Azam sees off his desire for a review with a smile.

Stokes capitalises on a bit of width from Rauf's next ball and thrashes it through point for four.

  3. Eng 112-2published at 20 overs

The hirsuite Shadab Khan shuffles through another over. A single apiece for Joe Root and Ben Stokes.

A bit of a two-paced pitch in Eden Gardens by the looks of things.

  4. Eng 110-2published at 19 overs

That brings Ben Stokes to the crease, who pokes Haris Rauf into the covers to get off the mark.

    Bairstow c Salman b Rauf 59 (Eng 108-2)

Jonny Bairstow nails a cover drive. He stands there at the crease willing this not to be out.

Bairstow creams a half-volley but ends up it hitting it straight into the hands of Agha Salman at cover.

The England opener can barely believe it. Haris Rauf, meanwhile, is chuckling away somewhat in disbelief at his fortune.

After holding his ground for longer than is politely accepted, Bairstow eventually trudges off.

Pakistan only have themselves to blame for going out. Losing 4 on the trot including to Afghanistan? Not good enough. Babar needs to go as captain and loads of passengers need to be removed now.

Dawid Malan the only wicket to fall thus far. He initially showed a bit of a poker face, attempting to convince umpire Joel Wilson he had not hit, but walked off as soon as the finger was raised knowing full well he'd got bat on it.

  9. Eng 106-1published at 18 overs

Shadab Khan, sun cream smeared into his beard, completes his second over. Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow happy to knock him into the gaps and farm the strike for the time being.

  10. Eng 102-1published at 16.1 overs

Jonny Bairstow with a well-timed punch off the back foot for Mohammad Wasim which should have been stopped by Fakhar Zaman in the deep, but he allows it to trickle through the boundary.

England saving their best for last by the looks of it. A very good platform here in Kolkata.

    Thanks, Sam.

I haven't seen any photographic evidence but Mick Jagger is in the crowd at Eden Gardens.

An interesting fact for you. Mick's son Lucas played international cricket for Brazil at youth team level.

  15. Eng 90-1published at 15 overs

Six from the over as Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow keep the scoreboard ticking over with singles and another two out to deep cover for Bairstow.

Good start all told for England. I'm off for a brew so I'll leave you in the capable hands of Timothy Abraham.

I think it will be tough to get 300 on this pitch. I think 250 or 260 would a be a good score at Eden Gardens today.

The execution of that shot was a bit iffy from Dawid Malan. It's a good sharp reaction catch from Muhammad Rizwan.

Dawid Malan was looking as an innocent as an angel, and tried to get one over on the umpire, but then immediately walked off when the decision was made.
