  1. Eng 25-0published at 4.2 overs

Back of a length from Shaheen Afridi and Jonny Bairstow whips the ball just in front of square for four.

Top shot. The most authoritative that he's played.

Scott Alder: Why aren’t England playing Livingstone and Curran today players with a ODI future, not people who won’t be around in the future like Moeen and Woakes.

  3. Eng 21-0published at 4 overs

Four more - and that's a lovely shot from Dawid Malan.

Full, wide and elegantly driven through extra cover. A productive over for England after a tricky start.

  4. Eng 16-0published at 3.4 overs

    Back-to-back boundaries for Jonny Bairstow.

The first comes with a square drive as he opens the face slightly before the next is tickled off his pads as Haris Rauf strays down leg.

That should help the England opener after he wafted unconvincingly at the first couple in the over.

Pakistan wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan stands too far back for me. I played with him at Sussex and there would be faint edges going through - off my bowling I might add - which wouldn't carry.

  6. Eng 8-0published at 3 overs

Shaheen Afridi's over ends with another big shout for caught behind.

It's only the bowler going for it, perhaps feeling he deserves a wicket after squaring up Dawid Malan.

No one else is interested and on we go. Batting doesn't look fun at the moment but the pitch looks like it will only get slower and tougher to bat on as the game goes on.

A mistimed drive and that was a pretty straightforward chance. A fortunate life for Dawid Malan. There's a lot going on when you follow through but Shaheen Afridi should have caught that.

  8. dropped catch

    Eng 7-0

Big chance missed by Shaheen Afridi off his own bowling.

Dawid Malan just pushed at it and chipped the ball back towards Shaheen, who stretched to reach a gentle catch but goes too far and lets it through.

Always tough for a bowler in their follow-through but that was one of the simpler return catches. Or it should have been.

  9. Eng 6-0published at 2 overs

Another wide from Haris Rauf but still no runs off the bat with Jonny Bairstow struggling.

He's beaten a couple of times in the over as the ball nips around, including the last which draws a big appeal for caught behind.

Pakistan seem convinced but then decide against the review. Good decision, it nipped away and beat the edge.

That was wild and wide from Haris Rauf. Pakistan wicketkeeper Muhammad Rizwan didn't even attempt to go for that. Instead, Mickey Arthur picked the ball out of a little hedge.

  11. Eng 5-0published at 1 over

    Erm... OK.

One of the widest balls you'll see in professional cricket as Haris Rauf gets his first delivery all wrong and it flies miles down the leg side for five wides.

Muhammad Rizwan could only watch on as it whizzed past him.

The air quality here is ranked very poor so whether that will have an impact on the players we will have to see. It's very hazy, misty and murky.

  14. Eng 0-0published at 1 over

Maiden to start for Shaheen Afridi. Not much in the way of carry with a couple of deliveries bouncing twice before reaching Muhammad Rizwan behind the stumps.

There was a leading edge from Dawid Malan midway through the over but, thankfully for England, the ball dropped short of cover.

Jonny Bairstow's form has been symptomatic of England's poor tournament. Dawid Malan, however, has actually had a pretty good World Cup with the bat.

Dawid Malan is facing the first ball today. I think that's the first time Jonny Bairstow has relinquished that responsibility at this World Cup.

  17. Eng 0-0published at 0.1 overs

We're away and it's a good, swinging delivery from Shaheen Afridi that Dawid Malan plays just inside the line of.

Interesting that it is Malan rather than Jonny Bairstow facing the first ball today. It's usually the other way around.

Right then, Shaheen Afridi is at the top of his mark.

Dawid Malan has taken guard. We're ready to go!

Well, almost, there is something behind the bowler's arm that is distracting the batter.

That's a nice touch for David Willey. Jos Buttler is the kind of captain who will oversee something like that. Over 100 appearances in all formats. He probably deserves something like that.

The players are out for the national anthems and it is David Willey - playing his last game for England - who leads them out.

He doesn't have a central contract and has announced that he will retire form international cricket at the end of this World Cup.
