The Champions Trophy for England is an important developmental stage for the next version of this team given the expectation on how much they will need to improve for the 50-over World Cup.
I'm sure it was just a case of doing what he thought will give England the best chance of winning the game, but Jos Buttler choosing to bat first did have the feel of 'if we're not going through, neither are you!'
As I say though, I'm sure it was more about the conditions and securing Champions Trophy qualification for 2025.
Wisden's Ben Gardner: As far as I can tell, if England bat first, 168 is the maximum they can make to keep Pakistan theoretically in the contest. Then six a ball for 29 balls would take Pakistan to 174, which would see them just overtake New Zealand on net run rate.

Downstairs in the Eden Gardens clubhouse there are loads of displays highlighting the history of cricket at this stadium, in Kolkata and Bengal.
Sourav Ganguly is from these parts. The shirt he waved around his head after the famous victory over England at Lord's in 2002 is here.
There are also countless pictures of the famous faces and international players from the area.
Australian journalist Melinda Farrell: Huge tongue-in-cheek groans filled the press box when Jos confirmed England will bat first.
Watch the moment England won the World Cup
"If this is the end of an era, and England's own vice-captain has said it should be, then let's take a moment to appreciate the ride."
That is the verdict of Matthew Henry as England's golden generation prepare for what could be their last dance.
England: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler (c & wk), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid.
Pakistan: Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (c), Muhammad Rizwan (wk), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Agha Salman, Mohammad Wasim, Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "We would have batted first but, to be honest, it was not in our hands.
"But we have a good bowling attack and we'll try to get a couple out early.
"We're looking forward to Fakhar's innings, everyone enjoys his batting and so do we.
"We will try our best because our momentum is good from the last two matches so we'll try to win again."
England captain Jos Buttler: "It's a little bit dry and we'd like to out there and make first use of the pitch. It was nice to break that losing steak against the Netherlands and get a win.
"Today is a good day for us and want to finish with our heads held high. We want to enjoy play playing together and do ourselves justice.
"David Willey's last game? He has been involved for long time. It will be emotional for him. He's been a great performer over a long period of time. Hopefully he can have a great day."

Eden Gardens... some place.
Babar Azam calls incorrectly at the toss and Jos Buttler does what every Pakistan fan hoped he wouldn't and opts to bat.
That basically means Pakistan need to bowl England out for next to nothing to progress on net run-rate.
England are unchanged. Pakistan bring Shadab Khan back into the XI for Hassan Ali.
Morning all, after five weeks that England fans and players alike would probably like to forget, their World Cup ends today.
It was a campaign that promised so much but quickly fell apart.
To such an extent that there is still something riding on this match against Pakistan: Champions Trophy qualification.
For Pakistan, it is a similar story, albeit they have done just enough to maintain the faintest glimmer of making the semi-finals.
They just have to win by 287 runs to do so. Simple.
They even have a chance if England bat first - chase 200 in 4.3 overs and they're through...
