  1. 'We'll try and get our mojo going for World Cup'published at 21:57 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2023

England coach Matthew Mott: "We're adapting to the conditions - it's very different out here, the pitches are quite slow and spin's played a part. We'll try and get our mojo going for the World Cup and be clear on what we're trying to achieve.

"We're looking to get out structure right, but there'll be subtle changes. All the quicks will rotate a little bit. We need to be really clear on our best players in our best positions. It was noticeable in the ODI there was a lot of young players, but this is a dress rehearsal for the World Cup."

"Having first seen Rehan Ahmed 18 months ago, he's only going to go from strength to strength, he's just been named in the Test squad. I think his batting is undersold too, he's a great asset."

  2. 'Russell brings that fear factor'published at 21:54 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2023

West Indies coach Darren Sammy on the return of Andre Russell: "Our goal is to win the World Cup. As a selection group we thought he could have an impact, he brings that fear factor, that X factor into any team he plays in.

"I look at that squad and it reminds me of some of the squads we had in 2012 and 2016, and it gives me that confidence that we could go all the way."

One man who won't be involved for England tonight is Jofra Archer.

The fast bowler is working his way back to full fitness after an elbow injury and the ECB have tried to be very careful with the 28-year-old.

However, there seems to have been a breakdown in communication because Archer played for his former school side in Barbados without the knowledge of managing director of England men's cricket Rob Key.

Archer took 4-18 for Foundation against Lords on day one of a three-day match on Sunday, bowling a mix of pace and left-arm spin.

Rehan Ahmed drove the ball into the pitch in the ODI series, bowled lots of googlies, and being able to turn the ball in each direction means you can get batters playing across the line. Turning the ball away, it can be difficult to hit it out of the ground.

As Jos Buttler mentioned at the toss, England are going in with two leg-spinners.

The vastly experienced Adil Rashid and his heir apparent Rehan Ahmed, who bowled very well in the ODI series.

Chris Woakes and Tymal Mills, who weren't part of the 50-over games, also come into the XI.

Meanwhile, big-hitting all-rounder Andre Russell makes his return to the West Indies side after more than two years.

England captain Jos Buttler: "We'd have looked to chase today as well.

"Looking good, we're excited. A change of format, we're looking forward to getting back to the T20s. Lots to look forward to with the World Cup just six months away.

"We're looking forward to that and fine tuning, finding some combinations and looking to play some good cricket.

"We'll experiment a little bit. These games come thick and fast as well so we need to find out a few things.

"Today we're going to play Adil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed together, which is exciting, and there are plenty of guys looking to impress.

"Rehan bowled fantasically in the ODIs and Adil has been brilliant for us for a long time. It'll be great to see them in action together."

West Indies captain Rovman Powell: "It looks a pretty good surface. We've got to restrict those English batters. We've got to bat and bowl either way. We're going to bowl first, it's a decision we'll stick with.

"We go with six specialist batters, three all-rounders in Holder, Shepherd and Russell and our premier fast bowler in Alzarri Joseph. A lot of us have been playing together for a long time, that can help us.

"It's very important, with a World Cup in less than six months. All the teams are trying to fine tune areas of their squads, and this provides us an opportunity to do so."

  9. West Indies win the toss and bowlpublished at 21:35 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2023

Jos Buttler calls heads, the coin comes down tails and West Indies skipper Rovman Powell wants to chase.

"We've got to bat and bowl, either way," he says. Very true.

The ODIs ended in disappointment for a new-look England side as West Indies claimed a 2-1 series win.

But with a few familiar faces having joined them in the Caribbean, Jos Buttler's side will be aiming to bounce back in the T20s.

The five-match series begins tonight at the Kensington Oval as both teams continue their preparations for the T20 World Cup - in the West Indies and USA - in June.
