This spell is the reason Wood was preferred as the only pace bowler -a short, sharp burst of short stuff to unsettle the batsmen.

It is one-dimensional and sometimes rather tedious, but it’s different and can produce a false shot.

To achieve parity we need to take a wicket for every 10 runs India score. Cough. And we’re bowling too full, not turning the ball, and Root’s looking better than our specialists… Oh, and we’re playing the best proven batting side in the world. In their backyard. Easy!

Shreyas survives. He knows that realistically, Wood is probably only going to get through a five-over spell, and is the sole seamer.

Patience, and he can cash in on the spinners after.

    This could be fun.

England are going to test Shreyas Iyer with the short stuff. Mark Wood is fired up.

The pitch isn't giving him loads to work with, but at his natural pace, it's just enough to have him unsettled.

Jeetan Patel, England's spin bowling coach, is going to be a busy man.

England’s spinners are not hitting the seam often enough, hence the lack of spin and bite we saw from Indian counterparts.

Oooh, Shreyas Iyer almost falls in the same way as Shubman Gill. He gets frustrated and goes for the big shot, and is lucky to get it past mid-wicket.

A sprawling Rehan Ahmed springs into action like a gazelle in the deep and saves the boundary.

Mark Wood is bowling with good pace and whizzes one past Shreyas Iyer's outside edge.

There's half an appeal from Ben Foakes behind the stumps, and captain Stokes questioningly makes a review sign at him.

He must've somehow forgotten for a second that he burned all three of them in the first 14 overs yesterday.

Sorry Anon, that one's lost on me. I'll share it anyway though, I'm sure there are plenty of our readers who are more culturally aware than me who will appreciate it.

Very good, though it may not be one for our younger readers.

We've made it through the first hour! We've got this, 4am club. Stay with me.

The players take a drinks' break with India 73 runs behind.

England go straight to Wood for Shreyas, who was bounced out when these two sides met at Edgbaston for the rearranged fifth Tests two summers backs. Shreyas arrived wearing a cap, which is swiftly dispensed with.

Do my eyes deceive me? Is someone bowling pace?

Mark Wood is on for the first time today and he almost has England's fourth. KL Rahul edges one just past his stumps for four with a streak of luck.

But he responds with a back-foot punch to the cover boundary and a pull down to fine leg for another four, so Wood's enthusiasm doesn't last very long.

Shreyas Iyer came out to bat in a cap, so I'd recommend he changes that.

Every player comes over to give Tom Hartley a high-five and congratulate his efforts. He'll be delighted with that.

That was an ugly shot from Shubman Gill. It’s not as though the ball is spinning sharply.

It will be a great confidence boost for Hartley and Stokes deserves credit for keeping the faith.

Hartley deserves that for the way he has come back today from a tough evening yesterday. That's a strange innings from Shubman. He was pretty much 23-3 given the tight review last night and catch that could have been taken by Stokes earlier this morning.

    From nowhere!

Tom Hartley has his first Test wicket! Shubman Gill was batting with such patience and control but one lapse in concentration costs him.

He simply chips it straight to Ben Duckett at mid-wicket and looks to the sky in frustration. A deserved reason to smile for Hartley, who has put yesterday's nightmare behind him and fought back well.

Jonathan France: The epitome of our spinners in India. Leach on, within his first over - full toss. All our spinners are bowling too full. You negate any turn in the pitch if you don’t bowl the right lengths!

Another one-run over, this time from Jack Leach.

This is what England's batting has done to us. It's made me incapable of finding anything to say when other teams do the exact opposite. Is this what it used to be like... all the time?

Credit to Tom Hartley, he's done well this morning. He's bowled it at a good pace and controlled his length much better than yesterday. He has conceded 16 runs in five overs, and eight of those were back-to-back boundaries by Rahul.
