No, Hartley is going to continue.

Not the most challenging over but just a single from it.

They're going to have to do something here if I'm going to keep my eyes open throughout this. It'll be a painful morning otherwise. Someone tell me a joke.

Root has looked head and shoulders above England’s other spinners. It is surprising he has been taken off so already.

  3. Ind 156-2published at 32 overs

Ermm, I can't really understand this.

Joe Root - by far the most threatening bowler - has been taken out of the attack for Jack Leach, who gifts Shubman Gill a full toss to help on its way for four.

Maybe Root is just changing ends and will replace Hartley next over, but still. Seems weird.

Stokes deserves enormous credit for how he tries to bring players through and the faith he shows. However Hartley doesn’t look good enough. We shouldn’t be giving up the small momentum we had to just give someone a chance to find their feet.

  5. Ind 149-2published at 31 overs

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul nudge and nurdle singles off Tom Hartley's latest over.

It's quite the contrast to the fireworks of Jaiswal's innings yesterday. And that's not entirely helpful for my energy levels at this hour.

Well done Mr Root. That wicket is going to make my first beer out here in California this evening taste a heck of a lot better.

It's quite telling that when England have picked three specialist spinners, Joe Root has been the biggest threat of them all.

And right on cue, KL Rahul sweeps him for four.

  8. How's stat?!published at 04:25 Greenwich Mean Time 26 January

The wicket of Jaiswal was Joe Root's 61st in Tests and 35th time he's dismissed a left-hander.

He averages 30.88 against lefties and 60.92 against right-handers.

  9. Ind 141-2published at 29 overs

After a bit of a nervy start, KL Rahul eases into his work with two sumptuous boundaries thumped down the ground to start Tom Hartley's over.

    Pressure is eased.

The drop off KL Rahul was a big error by Ben Foakes. We’ve said throughout that England simply can’t afford to miss chances.

And now that is another missed opportunity. Stokes completely lost the ball. Was it because of the red ball and the orange/red seats?

It might have gone into the low morning sun.

  11. Ind 132-2published at 28 overs

    Another missed opportunity!

The pressure tells on Shubman Gill, who tries to whack Joe Root into the next city. He makes a complete mess of it and the ball sails high into the sky. It should be comfortably taken by Stokes at mid-off but he flails his arms around in confusion - he literally can't see the ball.

It was very odd that Root didn’t bowl at Jaiswal yesterday.

It is much more difficult for an attacking left-hander to go after an off-spinner on a pitch like this.

Impressed again, Mike from Cornwall (assuming it's the same Mike from Cornwall who sent in yesterday's strong breakfast options).

I'd go for a bacon roll if it's wickets you're after. Might help roll them over... I'm sorry. It's too early.

This morning's breakfast dilemma is bacon roll or smoked salmon bagel. I'm trying to figure out which one is most likely to bring a quick cluster of wickets ...

  15. Ind 126-2published at 26 overs

Seems that Joe Root can do anything. It's the most threatening any England bowler has looked so far.

The pitch might have changed a bit overnight but it's also exemplifying how good Jaiswal's knock was yesterday.

Shubman Gill and KL Rahul are playing a lot more cautiously.

Tom Hartley, whose nine overs yesterday cost him 63 in the face of Yashasvi Jaiswal's brutality, looks a lot more confident this morning.

He has KL Rahul looking a little tentative, prodding at a couple, before getting off the mark with a single.

  17. Ind 124-2published at 24.2 overs

Oh, now then! It turns out that KL Rahul got an edge on the last ball of Joe Root's over - it was given a bye so the umpire must not have heard it.

A very difficult chance for Ben Foakes but a missed one.

Two days before the Test, Ben Stokes told us Joe Root might open the bowling, specifically for Yashasvi Jaiswal. Turns out it was the right plan, it's just that England waited too long to execute it. Root would have seen plenty of Jaiswal, they are Rajasthan team-mates at the IPL. Don't be surprised to see Root open in the second innings.

  19. Ind 124-2published at 24 overs

Oh! Joe Root gets one to fizz past new batter KL Rahul's defences and it completely deceives Ben Foakes, whizzing past him for a bye.

I hate to be negative this early but... where on earth was Root's bowling yesterday?

Just about the only time when I don’t mind my three-year old waking up at 3:45, is when England are playing at 4:00.
