India send in a left hander, Ben Stokes brings on Joe Root.

Axar Patel survives a maiden - just.

Axar Patel moving up the order is not a bad option - I like the move.

  3. Ind 65-3published at 19 overs

    Target 231

The left-handed Axar Patel is in next, probably to give India a right and left-hander combination. He batted number nine in the first innings, but he's a far more capable batter than that suggests.

A wicket maiden. Hartley has all three.

    Rohit lbw b Hartley 39 (Ind 63-3)

    Silence!

Captain Rohit Sharma trudges off to the disbelief of the Hyderabad crowd as replays show the ball to be hitting middle stump.

A canny bit of bowling from Hartley, who is a new bowler today. Pitched up, drifts through Rohit's defence and pins his front pad.

    England are all over this.

He hasn't hit it. Rohit is in trouble.

  8. India reviewpublished at 17.5 overs

Hello! Does Tom Hartley have three?

Rohit Sharma is given lbw. He reviews with a few seconds to spare. I don't think he's convinced...

England's field placement has been very good so far. We spoke about the in-out field last night but the positioning of the close fielders is key on these surfaces. It has been very good.

  11. Ind 63-2published at 17 overs

    Target 231

Ben Stokes applauds Jack Leach after each boundary. The reverse sweep isn't one that Rohit plays all the time, so he's taking the positives from forcing him to do something different.

  12. Ind 62-2published at 16.3 overs

Seems like Ollie Pope has been giving Rohit Sharma some lessons after all.

He nails back-to-back reverse sweeps to the boundary.

    That gets the crowd going.

I could be getting ahead of myself here, but I can't help but wonder when the Aussies and India last lost a home Test on the same day, if ever.

Tom, Berkshire, definitely getting ahead of himself

In the previous over, Rohit played a rare reverse sweep and made a mess of it. Root loudly suggested Pope give him a lesson in how to do it!

    Rohit was smiling. Nice banter.

Pope passes his concussion test, and on we go.

It's very tense out there. KL Rahul and Rohit digging in, Ben Stokes putting fielders around the bat, the ball fizzing and turning.

But Rohit eases the pressure with a well-timed sweep for four to end Tom Hartley's over.

    Don't go anywhere. We've got a contest.

Tom Hartley is transformed from the first innings, showing great control and getting some lovely dip. This is the benefit of the unerring backing given by Stokes. How might he have gone in the first innings if he'd have had some sort of bowl in a match beforehand?

  17. ouch!

    Ind 48-2published at 15.2 overs

Slight delay as Ollie Pope cops one on the helmet at silly point.

He is fine, with KL Rahul kindly coming over for a handshake and to check on him before the physio emerges.

Jaiswal’s wicket was very crucial. That will allow England's two left-arm spinners to settle down.

  19. Ind 48-2published at 15 overs

    Target 231

All of a sudden, England's spinners look unplayable.

Turn and bounce, zipping it past the outside edge. Rohit looks calm, but he's just defensively prodding, getting nowhere.

Remarkable that Ollie Pope has put India's own batters to shame in terms of scoring off the spinners.

A feature of Rahul's first innings was his confidence off the back foot to spin. That cut for four off Hartley was another example.
