Elsewhere in Brisbane, there is more interesting Test cricket going on.

Australia were set 216 for a 2-0 series win over West Indies and are currently 132-4, needing another 84 to win. They are still favourites with Steve Smith unbeaten on 57 but West Indies have put up a fight throughout.

Travis Head was the latest to fall for a first-ball duck, registering a king pair in the match.

Shamar Joseph has two wickets as he bowls despite injuring his toe nastily yesterday.

Mohammed Siraj might be the man to try to change that. He has a wonder with Tom Hartley at the end of the over which the crowd enjoys.

I thought India would miss Kohli with the bat but I reckon they’re missing his energy and aggression in the field too. They look very flat.

  5. dropped catch

And now Pope is dropped at slip! That's a proper sitter for KL Rahul. It has gone straight to him as the England number three tried to run away a cut.

It feels like a good time to tell this story. Once, I was with my young son and we ran into Ollie Pope, who was very kind with his time and had a short chat with us.

As we walked away, the conversation with my son went like this....

    Freddie: "Who was that?"

    Me: "That was Ollie."

    Freddie: "Is he your friend?"

Me: "Erm. I know him through work."

    Freddie: "What does he do?"

Me: "He plays cricket for England."

Freddie: "Do you play cricket for England?"

    Me: "Erm..."

Well I hope baby Ruby is admiring this one, Catherine. Ollie Pope drives Mohammed Siraj exquisitely down the ground.

I’m very grateful for this newborn parent support club. Baby Ruby is showing no sign of sleep but I’m trying to convince myself it’s because she’s a huge fan already and couldn’t possibly sleep before the 200.

Very tired Catherine and wide awake Ruby in Bristol

  9. Eng 390-7published at 94 overs

    Pope 180, Hartley 22

We're back under way and the England fans in the stands are soon on their feet applauding as another single to Pope takes England's lead to 200.

I really did not see this coming. They've got a real chance, haven't they?

Made the effort to get up at 4am today and follow the cricket. England have been brilliant by the look of it. Have India bowled poorly? Pope batting with the tail and India new ball in hand, surely innings should have been done by now?

    Mike O, North London

Win or lose here remember, with the way Test cricket is nowadays, this is effectively England's warm up match. We will only get better and better from this match on.

I know that feeling of nervously checking the score every hour through the night.

I'm awake because my partner is snoring. He has Ollie Pope to thank that he hasn't received an elbow in the back yet.

There's lots of hustle and bustle as ever from Siraj but Ollie Pope has it covered.

That's drinks. It has been England's hour without a doubt.

Bringing Siraj on with the new ball feels like a gamble. He bowls with lots of energy but can be expensive.

Mohammed Siraj's fielding has reminded Rohit Sharma of his presence. He's on for a bowl.

The lesser-spotted Mohammed Siraj swoops like a kingfisher on the boundary to deny Tom Hartley four more with a belly dive of a save.

From there the over turns sour for India as Ashwin's final delivery spits, beats KS Bharat and flies for four byes.

Ashwin looks angry. The England fans in the stands start to really believe.

Ollie Pope has batted so positively, taking the initiative from the bowlers who should be revelling in the conditions and, when he came in, and what the match situation was, makes it all the more impressive.

It’s a very modern Test innings, demonstrating how damaging the controlled reverse sweep can be.

I tell you what... Tom Hartley clubs the spin down the ground again, this time for a one-bounce four.

Mark Wood could biff a few too. Getting interested?
