We all love Bazball and it’s so exciting but it always gives the opponents a chance. England have had no thought of just trying to play the percentages this morning and it’s allowed India to get right back on top. But it’s just the way we play…

I never got any wickets like that! Absolute rank long hop, outside off stump, Ben Duckett playing like a genius has just chipped it straight to cover. England are in real trouble now, got to dig in, got to change their tactics here.

Oh no, no. no. What has Ben Duckett done?

He gets a total long-hop from Kuldeep Yadav but just pats in into the hands of extra cover.

If anything he was too tentative. He should have whacked it harder.

Well it seems Ben Stokes' approach to Siraj coming into the attack is to, well, attack. Having clipped one for four off his pads, he charges the India seamer and the ball flies through the covers to the boundary.

This team is going to keep on twisting what you think is right.

This is a big first over for England against Siraj. They can’t relax now they have seen off Bumrah.

Jasprit Bumrah's spell is done. Here's Mohammed Siraj for the first time today.

Remember there's no Ravichandran Ashwin and I'm not sure Ravindra Jadeja is fully fit either.

After a quick swig on something isotonic, we're back under way. Ben Stokes hammers Kuldeep Yadav down the ground in what has been a rare win for England in the past 40 minutes or so.

We have seen the pitch flatten out after the first hour on both days so far.

I guess it's because Ben Duckett is seen as a naturally aggressive player, Tom. Joe Root isn't as much. Or at least he wasn't. But yes, there's a lot of hindsight involved.

As I say that, Duckett smartly defends an over of Bumrah to get to drinks.

I’m new to cricket and following from Vietnam. Can someone explain why Root is criticised for playing risky while Duckett isn’t? Surely just the benefit of hindsight...

A Ben Stokes cut shot edges England's deficit below 200 but the nerves remain. Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav is bowling far better than yesterday and he beats Ben Duckett as the England opener attempts one of those sweeps.

Bumrah can't have many overs left in this spell.

England's two Bens are struggling as they attempt to dig in at the moment. Stokes was almost bowled in the previous over by Kuldeep and now Duckett is squared up by a Bumrah slower ball.

Ravichandran Ashwin is not here so Bumrah's clearly just decided he's going to rag him too - at 90mph.

    He's an extraordinary bowler.

Joe Root is not a Bazballer. He's a fabulous player but he's been sucked into a game that doesn't suit everyone, and it doesn't suit Joe. Reverse sweeping, ten minutes into day three to the best seam bowler in the world, fraught with danger - come on!

150 for Ben Duckettpublished at 45 overs

Duckett's response is to play the reverse sweep again. He makes similarly iffy connection but this time gets a single which brings up his 150.

England desperately need him to go on like Ollie Pope did in the first Test.

A very, very tough chance goes down.

Ben Duckett plays that reverse sweep to Kuldeep and doesn't make proper doesn't make proper connection.

Rohit sticks up a hand a slip but the ball does not stick.

Sorry, but all this is the way the whole team plays is nonsense. Why do all players have to play Bazball. The captain doesn’t so why does Joe?

  17. Eng 238-4published at 44 overs

Joe Root's batting average is better under Stokes and McCullum than during the rest of his career, by the way. Question the shot, yes, but some perspective.

England get two edgy boundaries during Bumrah's latest over.

Woke up at 3:45am to follow our boys consolidate a great start yesterday. But no, within a blink of an eye we are four down. England, this is Test cricket - whatever happened to patience?!

    Iain, York

Bazball is about letting players play. Root is what Root is. Let him play.

    Will, Hampshire

Has anyone seen Harry Brook booking a flight over. That middle order is having a massive Brook-shaped hole in it. Bairstow is a fantastic player. But it seems if he isn’t scoring these massive hundreds he can go quite cheaply.
