England were not playing the situation well before lunch and it is similar afterwards. They have got to try to somehow get close otherwise it will be curtains.

  2. Eng 300-7published at 66 overs

Hartley takes a single to square leg to retain the strike and bring up England's 300.

    They trail by 145.

    Foakes c Rohit b Siraj 13 (Eng 299-7)

And there goes England's last recognised batter.

Two wickets in two balls as Ben Foakes picks out Rohit Sharma at mid-on after Siraj's delivery just held in the pitch a little.

England have two inexperienced new batters at the crease in Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley. Their job is now consolidation.

  5. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 65 overs

    Stokes c Bumrah b Jadeja 41 (Eng 299-6)

    That's the big wicket!

England's captain departs attempting to blast Jadeja down the ground. It's a shot we've seen him play a thousand times before, but he doesn't get hold of it on this occasion and picks out Jasprit Bumrah on long on.

A massive blow to England's chances in this match.

A sensible partnership is developing for England. Just nice, simple, controlled cricket shots.

  7. Eng 297-5published at 64 overs

Ah, that's lovely. Ben Foakes times Siraj's first delivery beautifully and the ball races through the covers for four.

He turns one square to pick up two more, before seeing out four dot balls.

  8. Eng 291-5published at 63 overs

Foakes cuts for England's first run of the day, bringing Stokes back on strike.

The England captain attempts an elaborate reverse sweep, but misses Jadeja's delivery. The ball squirts off Jurel's gloves, but no chance of a bye.

  9. Eng 290-5published at 62 overs

A quiet start as Ben Stokes blocks out a Siraj maiden.

Ravindra Jadeja is going to take the ball at the other end, having enjoyed one over before lunch.

Right, the players are back out there, with Ben Stokes facing up to Mohammed Siraj.

A potentially decisive session - let's get going.

Well said, James! People are quick enough to shout Bazball from the rooftops when it works and clearly moan about it when it doesn't go to plan. Fickle fans everywhere! I'd rather have this style of Test cricket, not knowing what's going to happen rather than the "nudge, leave and collapse" we've been watching over the years. Live by the sword (well, bat) and all that!

    That's a fair point, James.

If Stokes and Foakes can hang around and score at a similar rate, England will be ahead towards the end of the day.

England scored 83-3 in that session. That would have been viewed as a good session before Stokes was in charge, but apparently it's a failure according to former players. Root tried to hit Bumrah off his line, with a shot that pre-dates Bazball. It's worked fine in the past, it didn't work today.

That was obviously a poor session for England and India are in firm control, even with a bowler down. Stokes is playing the situation, as he generally does.

England's cricket this morning's been carnage - They've lost any hope of advantage. We need Stokes at his best or we'll see that this Test Match is going to end up in the garbage....

Problems for England. They somehow need to find a way to get close to India’s first innings. That won’t be easy with amount of spin now.

    Thanks Matt.

I may not be able to deliver a bacon sandwich, but perhaps I can help manifest a better afternoon session.

It's fair to say that did not go to plan from England's perspective. I'll leave you in the hands of Mike Peter in the hope for better.

Where can I find a bacon sandwich at 6am?

England scored 83 runs in that session. They scored double that after tea yesterday.

It has had a very different feel.

  20. Lunch - Eng 290-5published at 61 overs

Jadeja almost strikes immediately as one delivery keeps low to miss the bat of Ben Foakes but it misses off stump too.

    That is lunch.

It has been India's session without a doubt.
