Ben Duckett still believes. He has to say that, of course.

England are staring down the barrel after one of their worst days in recent times.

If you missed it and can bear it, head over to read Stephan Shemilt's match report.

There will be a Test Match Special podcast available here later.

There's also reaction and analysis below. We'll be back at 03:45 GMT for day four.

  2. 'We're going to continue the way that we play'published at 12:02 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February

England opener Ben Duckett speaking to TNT Sports: "You've got to give credit to the way they played this evening, but I thought we batted superbly last night and actually they gave us nothing this morning and bowled really well. We were attacking like we were yesterday, it just didn't pay off.

On previous comments about using the sweep defensively: "It's incredibly fun. There's a lot more theory behind it than people probably think. I think people probably thought that sounded quite reckless, but I've learned from playing in Pakistan that I've got so many different options. They were quite attacking sweeps yesterday, but I was quite gutted a couple of games ago when I got out to Kuldeep caught at silly point, so my game is if they want to attack and have people around the bat then I'll try to get rid of them and then I can rotate a lot easier."

On Joe Root's dismissal: "Rooty's a freak, he can do things a lot of us can't do. In my eyes it's just the same as playing a drive and nicking off to second slip. He plays that shot so well, and I'm sure those people weren't saying that when he hit Cummins for six in the summer."

If England are out of the game: "No, 100% not. I think even sending in a nightwatchman when you're 320 ahead at the end shows that they're slightly wary of us. We're going to continue the way that we play and if we get two or three blokes in on that pitch scoring quickly then you never know what can happen."

Yep, let's not forget to congratulate Yashasvi Jaiswal.

A superb century from a very exciting young batter.

Credit to India their batsmen showed that batting and runs was there, England failed to apply the right approach to the situation.

Ben Duckett on the criticism of Joe Root's dismissal...

"That's in my eyes the same as playing a drive and nicking off to second slip.

"I am sure those people weren't saying that when he was hitting Pat Cummins for six in the summer."

Ben Duckett is the England player fronting up for the interviews.

"We were attacking like we were yesterday. It just didn't pay off," he says about England's wretched morning.

It was that morning session that really hurt England.

20 minutes into the day Joe Root was caught at slip playing his reverse scoop - the second time he's fallen to the shot in his Test career.

Jonny Bairstow was pinned in front for a four-back duck in the next over and Ben Duckett was tamely caught at cover.

Bairstow and Duckett were both dismissed by the superb Kuldeep Yadav.

I'm struggling to think of a worse day under Ben Stokes' captaincy, Ian.

Re 11.30 - 'seriously tough' I'd call an enormous understatement? Genuinely difficult to think of a worse day overall in recent times in English Test cricket isn't it? Gone from a serious chance of having a first-innings lead and really opening the series up, to certain defeat. And I know that this current team have pulled off some amazing things, but this is certain defeat. There's no way out of this.

England have been given a lesson today that Test cricket is played in ebbs and flows. The swashbuckling exciting Bazballing is well worth getting up for at 4am, but I just wish they had a bit of common sense at times. It’s going to cost them the game - they should have enough temperament and skill to bat the majority of the day and they failed.

Ben Stokes leads his team off with his chest puffed out.

England began 238 runs behind India with eight wickets left.

They end it having conceded a 126-run first-innings deficit and with India having extended that lead to 322.

  12. Close of play - Ind 196-2published at 11:30 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February

    Lead by 322

And that is the end of day three.

A day that start with so much hope has been seriously tough for England.

  13. Ind 196-2published at 50.2 overs

That lbw shout in the previous over? It would have just bounced over leg stump.

A good decision from Ben Stokes not to review.

Rehan Ahmed to bowl the last over of day three...

  15. Ind 195-2published at 50 overs

Kuldeep is hit on the backside by one that turns out of the rough. He didn't play a shot and England appeal for lbw.

    That might have been close.

  16. Ind 195-2published at 49 overs

    Lead by 321

Kuldeep, who started the day brilliantly with the ball in ripping out England's middle order, drives to add three more to India's lead and keep the strike with a couple of overs to go.

If that wicket has got your hopes up as an England fan, Tom Hartley also spun a ball to slip in that over.

Chasing 350+ on this surface would be so tough.
