  1. The wrong option?

    Last summer the board of Manchester United faced a huge decision; a decision they had not had to contemplate since the days of Top Gun, Mike + The Mechanics and the launch of Neighbours.

    They needed a new manager after Sir Alex Ferguson's sudden retirement. We shall never know (until someone writes a book about it, anyway) what discussions took place in that board room. We shall never know who was sounded out, who was discussed as a possible candidate.

    But we do now know - 11 months on - that David Moyes was not the right option.

    As Moyes heads for an extended summer break, tonight we may see another option - Jose Mourinho - lead his Chelsea side towards another Champions League final.
