"England's World Cup campaign starts with a defeat but there was still plenty that will have pleased manager Roy Hodgson and no-one would have quibbled had they drawn.

"Still hot and steamy here in Manaus and there were some tired legs out there at the final whistle. It is a scrap for survival against Uruguay now - how much has this taken out of England? Paid the price for poor defending."

"Wayne Rooney might not get a better chance than he did in the second half. You can't criticise his work-rate because he gives everything he has. When we got in the final third we didn't have enough quality to trouble them.

"The chance he had, he won't sleep tonight thinking about this. He should have gone across the goal to the other side. You've got to score those chances. You get one chance and you have to take that. He was really uncomfortable on the left, albeit he still set up the goal."

  3. Player reactionpublished at 01:05 British Summer Time 15 June 2014

England captain Steven Gerrard told BBC Sport: "They caused us a lot of problems down our left-hand side in the first half but we made tweaks at half-time and dealt with it better. We played most of the second half in their half.

"No matter what the result were tonight we'd need to beat Uruguay on Thursday. It's certainly doable.

"We weren't sure how much Italy would have improved from two years ago but they found an extra gear. However we matched them all the way.

"At this level it's so cruel. You can try so hard and come away with nothing.

"It was a tough night. It was warm, sticky - it was a tough pitch - it was dry. But they're excuses. Italy were very good."

Sidney:, external Rooney won't score in World Cup as he shouldn't get another game. Make way for Barkley, future captain!

Cameron:, external The Rooney abuse bound to start again. Everyone forgetting he got the assist for the goal, great ball as well.

Shane:, external Well played England, better than usual. Play like this in the next two games and we will go through.

"Disappointing for England, devastating almost, but I think you have to say Italy deserved to win. They created the better chances, Andrea Pirlo hit the bar in injury time, Antonio Candreva hit the post just before half-time, Mario Balotelli had one cleared off the line by Phil Jagielka.

"Those are defining moments of the game where England were just found wanting. Now they have to beat Uruguay. Can they recover?"

    Former England defender Rio Ferdinand

"In the second half the final ball let us down. We got in decent areas and delivery wasn't up to standards but Raheem Sterling was the star man and the go-to guy.

"At his age that's amazing to see. Ross Barkley was direct and wanted to make things happen and that's what you want to see from England. They're gaining valuable experience."

"Italy dictated the pace of the game, they made England take risks at times and knew how to pick them off. You cannot allow people to have free headers in the box like for Mario Balotelli's goal - you never once saw that in the Italian penalty area.

"Italy are a very experienced squad and Andrea Pirlo, a lot of people say he wasn't as good as he was in the Euros, but I think he dictated the game today."

"We've been saying prior to this tournament if the young guys are given a chance, and they give their all, we can't ask any more. We do lack a killer instinct.

"You only get one chance in a game at this level. Mario Balotelli one chance, one goal and Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben showed us that again last night."

    Former France and Arsenal striker

"England were just a bit nervous at the beginning, but they played well it wasn't that bad. Italy didn't have control of the game but they win and it will go down to that Wayne Rooney miss and Mario Balotelli meeting the cross in the box."

England captain Steven Gerrard: "Italy are a good team, we knew how they would play and they never surprised us.

"It's disappointing to come away with nothing. We were criticised two years ago for sitting back and being toothless but we were trying to create tonight. We were unlucky to get nothing about it.

"The chances were there, we created them. We need to finish a few more off but we can't point any fingers. We gave everything."

    Brilliant effort! Outrageous!

Andrea Pirlo bends a free-kick from right to left, outside of the foot, deceives everyone and hits the crossbar.

That would have been goal of the tournament.
