    Switzerland chance

You wait 25 minutes for a chance and then three arrive at once!

So close for Switzerland as Granit Xhaka forces Sergio Romero into a fine save with a crisply-struck shot before Stephan Lichtsteiner's effort is kept out.

Argentina break and Higuain fires his side's first serious chance tamely at the keeper.

Rob, Newbury: I am baffled. Apart from his goals, Messi has been awful in every game.

Jed, Oxford: Never seen Messi tackled so often as in this tournament. Good goals, but can't dribble, can't pass, can't tackle, can't be bothered. Awful.

"When you are not as good as your opponents sometimes you need to break the game up with little fouls to frustrate your opposition. It's a very good tactic. We always used to do that playing Arsenal. Ottmar Hitzfeld will have told the Switzerland players to slow the game down."

This is one of the biggest games in Switzerland's history but it has been pretty uneventful so far.

Angel Di Maria wins a free-kick after being fouled by Admir Mehmedi.

Tense times for Switzerland. Lionel Messi stands over the ball but his ball into the area is headed well over by Gozalo Higuain.

Messi loses out to Gokhan Inler in the centre circle who is then brought down by Javier Mascherano.

It's bruising but it's goalless with little sign of a goal at either end right now.

Benjamin Pinn:, external We are Red. We are White. We have banks but we don't fight! C'mon Switzerland.

Kevin Reeve:, external I think Switzerland could take Argentina all the way to pens, by neutralising them.

2Chainz:, external What I love about this World Cup is that we're close to the quarter-finals and I still can't tell who can win it.

"Angel Di Maria has been the most likely to do something in this match so far for Argentina."

Angel Di Maria is Argentina's liveliest player but groans ring around the stadium as the ball runs out for a goal kick.

Argentina are beginning to ask questions of the Swiss defence. Still neither keeper has had a shot to save.

Chris Gilbert:, external Switzerland are going to be tough to break down. Argentina may need a moment of brilliance from Lionel Messi again.

First flash of danger from Messi!

The Barcelona forward takes advantage as Valon Behrami switches off but his shot is comfortably gathered by the keeper.

The legendary Pele is watching from the stand. He looks as though he is still awake. It's been a slow start.

"So far the game is as we expected. Argentina are controlling possession, they're passing the ball around but at no great pace. Switzerland are sitting back and are going to play on the counter attack.

"Argentina don't really seem to have a style of play, they seem to rely on the brilliance of their individuals and play off the cuff. It's just whether they can break down Switzerland's resolute defence.

"Sergio Aguero is not on the official Fifa injured list as such but down on the Argentina bench he has got trainers on. He will not be playing any part in this game."

    Confident start by the Swiss.

An extremely encouraging passage of play sees Gokhan Inler and Xherdan Shaqiri tease and torment the Argentine defence before Admir Mehmedi gets in behind but his low cross is poor.

Mehmedi is the player who said he will not be swapping shirts with Messi. Watch this space. . .

"Argentina have gone for three up front, with Ezequiel Lavezzi on the right, Gonzalo Higuain on the left and Lionel Messi through the middle. Messi will be playing that number 10 role, but as a centre-forward.

"In midfield Fernando Gago and Javier Mascherano will play that holding role in front of the defence but Angel Di Maria will be the link man. He and Messi can cause devastating problems."

Argentina have started slowly and are sloppy in possession.

Lionel Messi has yet to show what he can do.

So far so good for Switzerland.

Officially there are 20,000 Argentina fans inside Arena de Sao Paulo. I'm not having that. More like 40,000. There's small pockets of red Swiss shirts while the yellow shirts of Brazil are cheering the European team.

Cautious start by both sides. First free-kick to Argentina after Ezequiel Lavezzi is brought down by Xherdan Shaqiri.
