Olcay Sahan squeezes a curling shot just wide of Hugo Lloris's post from 20 yards, but it was sloppy of Tottenham to give him the space to do so.

Vlad Chiriches's miscontrol and a blundering attempt by Federico Fazio to recover the situation meant the centre of the Spurs defence parted like the Red Sea.

"Kick-off is upon us, with the stadium only about half-full, though that's still a pretty healthy 30,000-ish, but it does hammer home the fact that for the first time in several years, Glasgow is not hosting Champions League football. Let's see what type of game these two champions can produce in the second tier of European competition."

"Loud support for Besiktas inside White Hart Lane, so Spurs need their own fans to back them, which means they must start this game quickly and get everyone on side."

We are up and running in a less-than-full Parkhead. Part of Celtic's stadium is closed for the evening and the remainder is not jam-packed.

  6. Postpublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 2 October 2014

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino on making 10 changes: "It's no risk. We have a very strong squad - each player can play in different competitions. Tonight we put out the best team for a good performance. We need to win today - it's an important game. It's a tough team. Besiktas have good players. They play 4-2-3-1 and they have a player we know - Demba Ba."

The other game in Everton's group has ended 1-1 between Wolfsburg and Lille. Both scorers have Premier League links, with Divock Origi (who is on loan from Liverpool) giving the French side the lead before Kevin De Bruyne (formerly of Chelsea) equalised for the Germans.

It has been a great game in Croatia between Rijeka and Sevilla in Group G, where the Spanish side have salvaged a draw at the death despite only having 10 men. They were winning 1-0 until Timothee Kolodziejczak saw red for conceding a penalty that the home side converted. Zoran Kvrzic then gave Rijeka the lead before Stephane Mbia's late leveller.

While English eyes might be on Demba Ba, the man in form for Besiktas is Olcay Sahan. The German-born playmaker has scored three in his side's last four games. And has an excellent beard.

I bet that helps him get in Slaven's teams.

What a get-up. Edgar Davids, who prowled the Tottenham midfield between 2005 and 2007, is at White Hart Lane sporting a biker jacket, suit and shades. He looks like a Tarantino hitman or something out of the Matrix.

Joe in Belfast: It would have to be Palermo. The only big pink team in Europe, what a setting to play football in too, and the food... the beach. Class. Forza Rosanero!

Arjun in Oxford: I would love to play for either St. Pauli or Cologne. Both have outstanding support and all the fans ask for in return is loyalty, dedication and love for the club.

Phil Waterhouse in South Wales: Definitely Waterhouse FC, CONCACAF Champions League participants, from Jamaica and they have the greatest name ever!

Neil in Norwich: I'd play for PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands, discovered them whilst playing FIFA.

"Celtic's Croatian opponents have been champions for the last nine seasons, which in itself suggests they're not a bad side. Angelo Henriquez - on loan from Manchester United - is on the bench but El Arabi Hilal Soudani, who scored a hat-trick in their first group match against the Romanians of Astra, starts on the right of a three-pronged attack."

Gareth Beale:, external The wholesale change of the Spurs team for the Europa League seems risky. Why not keep the spine intact and rotate fewer players?

Michael Blighe:, external Changing the entire team against Forest worked for Spurs last week, so maybe that'll be their tactic for all midweek games now.

Demba Ba is leading the line for Besiktas tonight, but there is another Premier League player making a lower-key return to England with the Turkish side.

Karim Frei, once of Fulham and Cardiff, in on the bench tonight for the visitors, but playing under the name Kerim Koyunlu. Still has to go some to keep up with Colin Kazim-Richards who has been known as Colin Kazim, Kazim Kazim and just plain old Kazim during his time in Turkey.

"Continuity that a group of players can have, knowing what team-mate you're playing beside, knowing their styles and so on, is important.

"Tottenham need to look to get ahead within the first 20 minutes. It didn't happen against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup and it ended up being a really hard night's work.

"An ideal scenario will be a 1-0 win, without any injuries, get back to the training pitch and looking towards Southampton on Saturday. In terms of Europe, they will be sitting in a good position on four points."

  20. Which foreign club would you play for?published at 19:26 British Summer Time 2 October 2014

Marc in Portsmouth: Lyford Cay FC, because they play in the Bahamas!

Ian in Gloucester: My choice of foreign club? Manchester City!

Scott in Chichester: Probably FC Zurich in Switzerland. Imagine taking on the might of Basel and the derby with those pesky Grasshoppers!

Matt in Stourbridge: I would play for a polish team. Scoring in front of those fans would be incredible. Imagine starting a poznan in Poznan!

The club you're looking for Matt are none other than Lech Poznan. Their last league win was a 6-2 thumping of Zawisza Bydgoszcz. The fans may have spent more time celebrating with their backs to the match, then actually watching the action.
