"I don't think Louis van Gaal will change his back three system, he's gone too far down the track to stop it now. But where do they all play? He's got a number of options that fit into the system so it will be interesting to see how they line up.

"With Falcao it all depends on what mood he is in. I've seen him play in France and he was electric, other times, not so.

"I can't see QPR holding out today, I just can't see them getting away with anything here."

Former Manchester United midfielder Lou Macari: "If you go back and look at the great players Manchester United have had, with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in the side, experienced and top players, there was no anxiety.

"We have lost some unbelievable players in the last two to three years, and no matter who you bring in, to be equal to those players is very difficult."

Louis van Gaal has written in his programme notes for today's game that the Manchester United fans can play their part in making his team settle into today's meeting with QPR.

"There seemed to be a nervousness about the players and that is something we need to address, particularly in our home games," he wrote.

"Players should feel comfortable when playing at their home ground. We want to bring that fear factor back to Old Trafford."

Independent chief football correspondent Sam Wallace:"There is so much expectation on Jack Wilshere. He is coming through in what is quite a barren landscape of English footballers. He has not helped himself at times, the smoking on holiday has to stop and he says it will.

"But he is one of a generation who have grown up in an unusual way for a teenager, where all your mistakes are out there. At 22, I think he is getting to grips with that."

Former Tottenham and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas: "Jack Wilshere has taken a lot of stick over the last year, he has had a dip in form, but in this country we are so quick to kill off our talent, and he is one of the best talents to come through. He has had a lot of injuries and they are hard to come back from.

"For me he ran the show yesterday. Even when Manchester City were on top he dragged Arsenal back and his goal was brilliant."

In yesterday's lunchtime kick-off Arsenal and Manchester City shared the points in a see-sawing 2-2 draw in which fine finishes from Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez were cancelled out by more predatory strikes from Sergio Aguero and Martin Demichelis.

"Maybe they see too quick the big money. They can't focus 100% on getting better. They think 'I'm a talent. I'll be like Rooney'," he said.

Independent chief football correspondent Sam Wallace, speaking about Newcastle United: "In many ways Alan Pardew has had an admirable career, but when he came in at Newcastle he replaced Chris Hughton who was popular with the fans, and when aligned to an unpopular regime things were always going to be difficult to be for him as soon as things started to go wrong.

"In the first game against Manchester City I thought they looked promising, but Pardew has had to refashion his side, with £40m worth of signings and last season his team finished poorly."

Former Tottenham and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas, talking about another of his former clubs, Newcastle United: "Issues usually start at the top and filter their way down through the management and onto the pitch. If Newcastle needed an example of that it was yesterday. There were some pretty poor performances out there.

"One of the issues is how much control Alan Pardew has got. There are a few questions the fans have highlighted regarding the players coming in and out.

"What is the identity now of Newcastle United? The stadium name has gone, and they have not got the core players they need. When I was there there was Alan Shearer, Gary Speed and Steve Harper. They were players who came through the Newcastle system and knew what the club was about."

  10. 'Newcastle should not sack Pardew'published at 12:29 British Summer Time 14 September 2014

"The other problem with Newcastle is all the rumours that Mike Ashley wants to sell the club and also rumours that he is interested in investing in Rangers. The club are in a pickle at the moment but I don't think they should pull the trigger on the manager yet."

  12. Newcastle - 'a soap opera club'published at 12:25 British Summer Time 14 September 2014

    Jonathan Pearce
BBC Match of the Day commentator on MOTD 2 Extra

"You can't blame the manager for the performance of the two centre-backs yesterday, and the goalkeeper didn't help with his display either.

"But Alan Pardew knows it's a results business and the results aren't coming. The writing does seem to be on the wall, whether or not there is another U-turn waiting I'm not so sure this time.

"I do think he's had his best players sold from underneath him and I think the owner needs to share some responsibility. It's a soap opera club and anything that happens seems to be out there on public show, that certainly doesn't help matters."

"Louis van Gaal could have four debutants against QPR at Old Trafford, including Radamel Falcao. In addition, £59.7m record signing Angel Di Maria is expected to make his first appearance at Old Trafford.

"Remarkably, the 2013 champions begin the day out of the Premier League relegation zone only on goal difference. That situation is not expected to last long though.

"Indeed, van Gaal's biggest problem seems to be finding a formation all his stellar names can fit into."

On returning to Old Trafford for the first time since leaving Manchester United: "It will be emotional. I had great years there, some really good times. I never got to say goodbye when I left, which was unfortunate, so it will be a nice opportunity to say bye to some of the people who helped me achieve what I did.

"Harry Redknapp gave me the opportunity to start at West Ham, this will be the final chapter in my career and to finish it with him was a huge pull.

"I'm not expecting silverware or bus parades. It is survival. I'm expecting to stay in the league. That is what the fans want, that is what the club needs. As players we need to go out and deliver."

Ferdinand, 35, made 455 appearances for Manchester United between 2002 and 2014.

De Gea; Lingard, Young, Blackett, Smalling, Jones; Fletcher, Herrera, Mata; Hernandez, Rooney.

If the team Louis van Gaal sent out in his last match at Old Trafford was a nudge for the Manchester United hierarchy to loosen the purse strings, then it seems to have done the trick.

Around £120m worth of talent could make their home debut for the club today with Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind all at the Dutchman's disposal.
