"QPR's game plan was obviously to sit back and defend deep, but now you have conceded what do you do? Do you come out and try to get an equaliser and risk getting beaten 4-0 like at Spurs? Or do you go damage limitation?"

Angel Di Maria is apparently the 31st player from Argentina to score in the Premier League. There's a pub quiz tie-breaker round sorted for someone. Name them.

Amir Hamza:, external Such a poor way to concede!! QPR prepare for an onslaught!!

Suheil Patel:, external Lucky but he'll take that! Di Maria with his first goal. Already in love with that celebration!

QPR's gameplan may well need tearing up now. They do have play-off hero Bobby Zamora on the bench, as well as box of tricks Adel Taarabt.

Manchester United strangle a half-hearted penalty shout as Ander Herrera goes down under a Clint Hill challenge.

John: What a delivery! That's what £59m gets you these days I suppose.

"Clint Hill was stupid to give away the free-kick in the first place, it was a great position for Angel Di Maria to just whip it in. Robert Green did not know what to do, you can't blame him, Di Maria has whipped it in and it has just curled in the far post.

"When you're defending so deep and so well all it takes is one person to make a mistake and you have conceded a goal."

  7. Postpublished at 16:26 British Summer Time 14 September 2014

For £60m you might expect Angel Di Maria to be able to whip in a good free-kick, but that was a peach of a ball in. As Alan Hansen would say - 'difficult to defend against...'

The British record signing is up and running! Manchester United get the breakthrough from a set-piece, as Angel Di Maria lands a lovely delivery from wide out on the right wing right in the danger zone. Clint Hill can't quite clear it, and the bounce takes it into far corner.

BBC Sport's Simon Stone at Old Trafford: "Juan Mata is looking to influence proceedings by dropping deep or pulling wide to get himself on the ball.

"He has had United's best chance too, which he scooped over the bar. Ander Herrera has also been heavily involved in the early stages, which have been played almost exclusively around the QPR penalty area, although Robin van Persie just cost him a chance with an unwanted intervention as he was lining up a shot.

"Strangely these days, once Joe Jordan retreated back to the QPR bench, there was no-one in either technical area."

Ruairidh Anderson:, external How does Jonny Evans get a game at Man Utd? He would struggle at Championship level.

Richard:, external First 15 minutes have been the best of our season so far. Less long balls, faster passing. We look more like Man United.

Angel Di Maria can't half shift, like a border collie down the left wing as a rare QPR attack breaks down. It comes to nothing but the British record signing showed real pace there.

The away side are just starting to see more of the ball though - even though United have had over 70% of possession so far.

    Former Wales international Robbie Savage

"The interchange up front between Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata is very good, but for all the possession Man United have had, Robert Green is yet to make a save in the QPR goal. The most dangerous player you would say is Rafael when he breaks down the right. Other than that, the atmosphere has gone a bit quiet."

United do get in behind for the first time as Marcos Rojo breaks forward, he lofts a nice ball to the back post but Robin van Persie and Ander Herrera get in each other's way! A better shout and there was a shooting opportunity there.

  15. Postpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 14 September 2014

BBC Sport's Simon Stone is reporting from Old Trafford: "First things first, three at the back has gone. Marcos Rojo started as an orthodox left-back, with Rafael on the right and Tyler Blackett partnering Jonny Evans in the middle.

"Daley Blind is sitting just in front, with Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria ahead of him.

"Second thing to note, when Di Maria gets the ball, the same fizz of excitement flies round Old Trafford as when Cristiano Ronaldo was here."

Matt Collingwood:, external Fantastic to see United starting with a proper back four again. Line-up looks far more orthodox today. Optimistic.

  17. Postpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 14 September 2014

David De Gea's first touch is to sweep up a cross from the left, he's been a spectator so far. There's more urgency from the home side for sure but still more end product needed. Rafael gets clear down the right but his cross is poor.

  18. Postpublished at 16:12 British Summer Time 14 September 2014

BBC Sport's Simon Stone is reporting from Old Trafford: "There was a time, in 2005, when Rio Ferdinand was booed by United fans on a pre-season tour of the Far East.

"Those days are long gone. History will remember Ferdinand as one of the Red Devils' very best defenders, well worth the £29.1million Sir Alex Ferguson spent on him in 2002 - he was unveiled in a cream suit.

"Ferdinand was cheered by United fans as he came out for the warm-up, when he returned to the dressing room, and when his name was read out ahead of kick-off.

"Today though, he is playing for someone else. The 35-year-old scored the final goal for a Ferguson team at Old Trafford. How he would love another for QPR."

Daley Blind is the playmaker in this United line-up, playing more passes (17) than anyone else so far. He's the metronome, the tempo setter, and he's doing a decent job so far.

QPR will be pleased enough though to reach the 10-minute mark without Rob Green having to make a save.

  20. CLOSE!published at 16:08 British Summer Time 14 September 2014

It's all congested in the middle as United look pretty narrow, but they craft a decent opening down the right in the end. Rafael feeds the underlap of Ander Herrera, he looks up and picks out Juan Mata on the edge of the box, he's closed down well and scoops his shot over the top. Rich applause from the patrons.
