"From what I have seen I think Burnley will struggle for goals this season. It's not just about their front players but right across the team. They defend very well but that is very wearing. When they get to January they will be tired.

"It pains me to say it but I don't see how they can stay up. Last week they had a golden opportunity to get three points and they blew it. That tells me all I need to know."

"That was a wonderful cross from Tom Cleverley. Wojciech Szczesny made himself big at his far post, but that was a great change for Ciaran Clark. Villa should be one-up."

And a decent opening for Hull too, after 15 minutes of dominance for Newcastle. Steve Bruce's side move away smartly down the left flank and pull it back into the path of Nikica Jelavic. The Croatian snatches at the shot though and there's no power, an easy save for Tim Krul.

"On the strength of how many of them participated in their fifth-minute protest, the fans in St James Park might be undecided about Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, but they have just united to pay tribute to Magpies fans Liam Sweeney and John Alder, who were killed when a Malaysia Airlines jet was shot down over Ukraine on 17 July. The entire ground broke into spontaneous applause after 17 minutes to mark the date and flight number of the jet."

  5. GREAT SAVE!published at 15:23 British Summer Time 20 September 2014

Villa should be ahead! They whip in a free-kick, Arsenal's defensive line is a travesty and Ciaran Clark is all alone at the far post. He has to stretch to reach it and as a result doesn't generate enough power, and Wojciech Szczesny is able to save his header.

    Big, big opening...

"Aston Villa are defending using zonal marking, which is a system I never liked as a player. It takes away the responsibility of looking after your man.

"What Paul Lambert has done in the off-season is to add great Premier League experience to his team, with players such as Richardson and Cleverley. Previously, they have had a young team on the field. And they look so well organised."

Areef:, external Never have I seen so much persistence from a club with a manager whose position seems so untenable. Alan Pardew holds a brave face.

Arsenal have a sight of goal but Aaron Ramsey pulls it to the left under intense pressure.

Can we have a goal eh? Anywhere?

Wayne Routledge scored a stunner against West Brom towards the end of last month and he has a crack at topping that strike against Southampton with a dipping effort from outside the area, but it drops wide of goal.

Lovely move from Burnley as midfielder Dave Jones starts and ends it, playing a ball into the target man and picking it up again, but his low drive is right at Sunderland keeper Vito Mannone.

"Mesut Ozil has been ordinary so far, and Arsenal's performance is only marginally better than it was against Dortmund. Villa look impressive, but at home for a change. It is the most confident I have seen them for a while. They look lively. Fabian Delph and Andreas Weimann look sharp. It is an interesting contest. I would never write Arsenal off, they have too much class, but there are reasons to be cheerful for Villa."

An early scare for Southampton as Wayne Routledge delivers a teasing cross into the area. It misses the head of Wilfried Bony but goes straight to the feet of Nathan Dyer. He can't connect properly, though, and a relieved Saints defence clears.

"Villa are doing well in midfield. Whenever Arsenal have the ball there, Fabian Delph and Tom Cleverley are sprinting into them and making life difficult. Delph played well when he made his England debut, charging into challenges.

"It was a ferocious start to the game but Villa are dropping back, letting the game play out in front of them."
