Remy Cabella is proving a decent outlet on the Newcastle left, he stands up a cross which is helped on and Jack Colback arrives on it. He can't get much power in his left-footed strike though and it's easy enough for Allan McGregor to pouch the save. Alan Pardew will be relatively pleased with Newcastle's start.

    Final Score

"We have seen signs around the ground of Pardew out. It is very difficult for the players, who are very attuned to these sorts of things, although there is a lot of chanting in support of the club too. At the moment Newcastle are just trying to get back into the game, because Hull have started well."

"Looks like plenty of Newcastle fans did get their anti-Pardew posters in, but those displaying them were definitely in the minority."

It has been a quiet start in the top-four clash at the Liberty Stadium. Both teams are looking to get the ball down and play, while hunting efficiently to regain possession when they don't and they are cancelling each other out at the moment. No chances to speak of yet.

Dobs:, external Villa getting Arsenal pressing back. Aggressive stuff!

Mohamed Mushamu:, external I don't understand why Ozil is starting - he should be on the bench in my view.

James William Dingle:, external No defenders on the Arsenal bench today, though £170m in the bank. Contrary to what some believe, Arsene doesn't 'know'.

Villa look dangerous every time Arsenal lose the ball. They have plenty of pace and power in attack. Arsenal are knocking it around in usual trademark style but the closest they came was when Danny Welbeck curled one over the top.

The 'Sack Pardew' signs are held up by a smattering of Newcastle fans but it's far from universal dissent. The fans are singing a protest song but it's aimed at owner Mike Ashley, specifically his weight and dubious parentage. He smiles back at them.

Former Everton captain at Villa Park for BBC Radio 5 live

"Arsenal have started with all possession and I think that'll be the pattern of the game. Villa are playing on the counter-attack.

"The key for Arsenal is the fact they are playing Mesut Ozil in his favourite position just behind Danny Welbeck. There has been a clamour for that, particularly as Ozil hasn't started the season well."

There are question marks over the health of some of the Villa team today - but no worries about Andreas Weimann! He closes down Wojciech Szczesny superbly, forcing the keeper into a scuffed clearance and Fabian Delph picks it up.

"The stadium announcer lifts the mood ahead of kick-off at St James' Park by accidentally reading out Shola - rather than Sammy - Ameobi's name as he announces the Newcastle team, bringing laughter from the home fans, and the players got a great reception when they walked out. I don't see many SackPardew.com posters in among the fans directly behind me, but I guess we won't find out how many are protesting against their manager until the fifth-minute."

Don Dealgan:, external Strange fragility at core of Arsenal. Lack of a tough CDM? In Champions League midweek they were awful. Toughie at mean Villa today...

Reza Sait:, external Sanchez on the bench and Ozil plays yet again. I prefer Rosicky. Hard working and never gives the ball away. Sigh...Mr Wenger.

Simon Ferocious:, external Big test for Villa today. Deserve to be where they are. Hutton has been superb for them. Well done Paul Lambert.

Nath from Portsmouth: Regardless of the fans' protests towards Pardew, the players are paid thousands of pounds a week and they should be performing regardless of the turmoil surrounding the club.

Craig in Saudi: Of course, ultimately this is of Mike Ashley's own making. In this world you reap what you sow and get what you give out yourself. Since the very beginning of Ashley's time at Newcastle it has been nothing short of one long sad circus.
