Ade: Someone explain to me how anyone can think Mark Noble should be in the England squad.

Sam: Just want to thank Liverpool for buying Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren for £45 million. Seems Saints are on the up and Liverpool on the way down.

Mark, Notts: Top four or five clubs will be seeing Enner Valencia as one that got away. Lad looks top drawer.

  2. CLOSE!published at 18:54 British Summer Time 20 September 2014

Adam Lallana loses possession after a challenge inside the area, Liverpool fans want a penalty but the ball spills out to Alberto Moreno, who in turn picks out Fabio Borini and the striker curls a shot just over the bar. The Reds are starting to get a little closer to that equaliser.

Mario Balotelli has not had as many chances as he would have liked but he gets his foot around a decent effort on the edge of the area and bends a shot towards goal, it is too close to Adrian, though, and ultimately a comfortable save for the West Ham keeper.

Better from Liverpool as Mario Balotelli slices open the West Ham defence with a fine ball to Fabio Borini, who has space but shoots low straight at Adrian from a tricky angle.

Alex d'Albertanson:, external Dad just broke the dishwasher kicking it in anger at Liverpool's inept display. Pick it up before the sofa's destroyed!

Luke Gwalchmai:, external I may be an Arsenal fan, but as an Englishman Sterling is a talent to really get excited about for the national team's future.

Liverpool win a free-kick right by the corner flag which Steven Gerrard takes, floating the ball into the area but West Ham heads clear it and Mark Noble leads a quick counter. Liverpool, though, recover to snuff it out.

Tottenham academy coach on BBC London 94.9

"Liverpool have started putting together a few passes, just as expected. That's their style, in that they like to dominate their opposition through possession."

Better movement from Liverpool, just the finish missing as Adam Lallana stabs the ball into the path of Raheem Sterling on the edge of the area but the forward sweeps a low shot wide.

Chris Pybus:, external Brendan Rodgers needs to hold his hands up and hire a defensive coach like Kenny Dalglish did. No composure at all.

Charlie Smith:, external Important that Liverpool are without both their best players of last season. It's not all down to Luis Suarez leaving, Daniel Sturridge's injury is huge.

  12. KICK-OFFpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 20 September 2014

Brendan Rodgers did not get his tactics quite right for this game before kick-off and he makes another change as Lucas fails to emerge for the second half, instead Adam Lallana is on in his place.

Liverpool get the second half up and running, as the referee finally heads on to the pitch.

"Brendan Rodgers finished second in the Premier League, putting Liverpool back in the Champions League, then had to sell his best player, and needed to rebuild the squad for Champions League football.

"He has admitted they are not firing on all cylinders, but it will take a while for the players to get to know each other. Plus they are missing Daniel Sturridge as well, which is huge."

Cei Frampton:, external I don't understand why Liverpool have such a high expectations this season? That starting XI is nothing on the real contenders!

Ahmer Murad:, external I thought Fabio Borini would grab this chance, really make a statement. Don't remember seeing him at all, though.

Ash:, external Steven Gerrard's a great distributor but he can't play defensive midfield. He goes forward instead of covering and he's too slow to stop counter attacks.

    Liverpool

Six shots on target for West Ham, compared to Liverpool's one. It was a quiet half for Reds striker Fabio Borini, who started because Brendan Rodgers felt his pace would be useful. Not seen much of that yet though...

  17. Text us on 81111published at 18:27 British Summer Time 20 September 2014

Salim, Blackburn: Why has Brendan Rodgers bought players that he never plays? Typical waste of money. At least Man United bought players that are straight in the first team.

  18. Manager reactionpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 20 September 2014

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "We had a good work-rate and concentration from the start. We had a very good first half when we were in control and dominated the game.

"The second half was more about keeping the result. We had less drive going forward. Overall, it was a very important game. It was a good win.

"You don't see that [three goals in four minutes] often but they had a big blow with the first goal. They couldn't recover and we took advantage of that very quickly. After that it was game over.

"They (Danny Welbeck and Mesut Ozil) combined very well, especially in the first half. Our plan today was to play Mesut behind their midfield and it worked.

"I'm confident we will go from strength to strength now."

    Former Wales international Robbie Savage
    BBC Radio 5 live's 606 phone-in

"I stand by what I said about Alan Pardew after the game against Southampton last week because I didn't say he was a broken man, I said he sounded like a broken man. His team was poor, he had to face the press and in the post-match press conference he sounded dejected.

"The passion in his voice this week was better. He was in a stronger position after drawing 2-2 and the fans were behind him, but I stand by what I said. You are there to be shot at. I was a player, and the amount of times I have got hammered after games, I'm not going to say: 'He had a go at me'. I wanted to prove them wrong."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew tells BBC Sport: "Sometimes there's some really unfair things. I'll pick up Robbie Savage for this week because he said I was a broken man and I was far from that this week. I've tried to carry the job with dignity and be honest and sometimes it's nice if professionals in the game reflect that and I thought that article was not right and we've had a lot of press like that.

"Sometimes it's also important to know we're trying to do an honest job. It's not just about me, it's about my staff and people who work every day who come in and want to make this team better. It's something I feel very strongly about defending and that's an example of which I thought was wrong."
