Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to Sky Sports: "We deserved the victory. The team worked hard and showed their character. In the end, the points are the most important thing.

"No [it is not a relief]. If you have a good result, you are a great manager if you lose you are a bad manager. We have our idea, our philosophy and we need time but it was important to get this result today.

On Harry Kane: "He is an important player. We have a lot of very good players. It is true the performance like in the last game and today, he maybe deserves to play in the Premier League more. It was a great goal, and a happy goal for him and the team."

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert says he cannot condone Christian Benteke's actions as he was sent off but criticises Tottenham's Ryan Mason for his part in the red card.

"You can't raise your hands" is very much the order of the day.

Terry Lambert:, external Spurs mugged both West Ham and Aston Villa. Due a third claret and blue mugging at Burnley (on 20 December). Spurs fans will now say Champions League is go.

Jonathan Warren:, external You can't blame Paul Lambert for latest shambles. Christian Benteke let us down (see 64 mins). Petulance just as he was getting back to fitness.

Interestingly, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino doesn't understand the word 'relief' - he certainly should do after that turnaround.

Full reaction to come from both camps.

Harry Kane told Sky Sports: "It was one of my best moments in a Spurs shirt so far. To be 1-0 down in an important game we needed to win, to pull it back is a moment I won't forget. It's all smiles in the dressing room now.

"We needed a bit more urgency and needed to make something happen. We needed to make some tackles. One of their players reacted and got sent off and we were able to take advantage."

Paul, London: Very disappointed with Spurs today. A serious lack of quality and, even more worryingly, minimal urgency. They look like this is the end of a long season. We need to give more of our youngsters a chance. They are the only ones with any drive! Lucky to come away with anything.

Jon, Eastleigh: A win is a good result but it doesn't change the fact that we've played so poorly and it's becoming a bit of a habit. Mauricio Pochettino needs time but he also needs results. Goals from a terribly defended corner and a deflected free-kick does not a good performance make.

That late Harry Kane winner has lifted Spurs into eighth place, above Everton and Manchester United. They are now only three points behind rivals Arsenal.

Villa, on the other hand, are two points clear of the relegation zone.

Harry Kane is understandably very happy with his first Premier League goal of the season and reveals that he had to fight Erik Lamela for the free-kick which brought the winner.

VB:, external Erik Lamela and Harry Kane should have started, but we at least made the changes with enough time left to recover. Gutsy second half.

Paul Mulligan:, external At last some luck and three points for Spurs. Kane must have played his way into the starting XI for next week.

Jason Ferdinando:, external KANE! Love that player. Gave us the most undeserved victory ever. Learned all he knows at Orient.

Villa Park has emptied very fast. Away into the Birmingham night, the home fans will be wondering how on earth they ended up losing that game. Christian Benteke - who was the last Villa player to get sent-off before today as well -will now miss the next three games. His season just can't get going.

"That is a huge win for Spurs. With six minutes to go they didn't look like they would get anything out of the game at all. Even when under pressure they didn't concede the second goal, but overall the match was changed by the red card for Christian Benteke. That has the potential to really adversely affect Villa's season."
