  1. RED CARDpublished at 17:22 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

Referee Neil Swarbrick reaches into the back pocket - it's a red card for Christian Benteke!

He goes off to a standing ovation. A replay shows that in the scuffle following a challenge with Ryan Mason, Mason put his head into Benteke's face and the Belgian swatted it away with a mild slap.

Neither the Mason headbutt or the Benteke slap were forceful, but you can't raise your hands...

Daniel Woodley:, external Harry Kane has done more in 20 seconds than Emmanuel Adebayor did in 57 minutes.

  4. YELLOW CARDpublished at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

Bit of a crowd scene and plenty of scuffling after Jan Vertonghen goes in two-footed, he does win the ball but is still booked for his troubles. For a minute there I thought referee Neil Swarbrick was considering a red.

"Harry Kane's made an immediate impact hasn't he? A good run down the right-hand side but he couldn't find a team-mate. The Spurs players do appear to have been lifted already though. Kane's been playing well this year, especially in Europe, and it looks as though he will play just off Roberto Soldado. I would imagine he will provide more of an attacking threat than Emmanuel Adebyaor certainly."

  6. CLOSE!published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

This is why the Spurs fans wanted Harry Kane on so much! He wins a corner, then thumps in a header into Brad Guzan's chest. More impact in 60 seconds than Emmanuel Adebayor managed in 60 minutes.

  7. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

Here he is! Harry Kane is on, in place of Emmanuel Adebayor. He's a cup specialist - he's never scored in the Premier League. A big unit though, he wins a corner instantly with some direct running.

Loud booing from the away end and the strains of "We want our Tottenham back."

It's pretty desperate stuff from Spurs to be honest. Villa don't look too much better but they are 1-0 up and can play on the counter now.

James Aylott:, external Mauricio Pochetino is losing it! Need goals and needs to try Harry Kane. He has scored Premier League goals when given the chance. It's like Christian Gross all over again.

Mat Atahari:, external It all started when spurs sacked Andre Villas-Boas. Should have tried to keep him and given him time. As they say, you'll never know.

Villas-Boas's Zenit St Petersburg went seven points clear at the top of the Russian Premier League with a 1-0 win away to second-placed CSKA Moscow on Saturday.

  10. CLOSE!published at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

Almost a gimme for Spurs! Brad Guzan makes a rare error, dropping Nacer Chadli's low cross at the feet of Emmanuel Adebayor, who is sliding in and can't convert it at the second attempt.

Do Spurs need to go more direct? The name of Harry Kane continues to ring out from the travelling fans.

Nice feet again from the goalscorer Andreas Weimann as he turns inside two men and tries to find Christian Benteke with a clever chip - good defending this time from Younes Kaboul though to head it away.

Rory:, external Bad call by Mauricio Pochettino. Take off the only player who has some guile and can see a pass and leave on Nacer Chadli.

Nacer Chadli's Premier League career in a nutshell - one bright touch to open up space, one poor touch to close it down again. He does win a corner but Villa defend it comfortably.

"Christian Eriksen wasn't really involved too much in that first half but you know he is the type of player who can make something happen, so him coming off is something of a surprise. Tottenham created enough openings in the first half but didn't really test Brad Guzan enough. They did look threatening at times but could never find the final ball to threaten the Villa defence."

Back in play at Villa Park.

  16. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2014

Erik Lamela is indeed on in place of Christian Eriksen at the break. Can he lift Spurs?

Tom, London: I remember when Harry Redknapp came in at Spurs, he straight away signed Wilson Palacios and later Scott Parker to toughen us up. This current team reminds of the Juande Ramos era. Good players but completely spineless. Mauricio Pochettino needs time to run amok through this squad and get rid of the deadwood/weak players who don't care about playing for us.

Nick, Kent: As a Spurs fan I honestly believe all our problems can be traced back to Daniel Levy. He has a revolving door of managers, sells the best players and buys no one to replace them.

Darren, Plymouth: Well well, Daniel Levy and Joe Lewis have a lot to be held accountable for regarding this current crop of players. Continually selling your best players and making a profit does not equal success on the pitch. Hugo Lloris will be gone next. So frustrating when we were in the Champions League three seasons ago.

Erik Lamela was going through a diligent half-time warm-up routine. Is the Argentine trickster coming on at the break?

Harry Redknapp's Spurs weren't perfect - but the days of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon racing down the flanks, Luka Modric pulling the strings, Rafael van der Vaart etc seem a long way away now...

Paul Moore:, external Spurs need Moussa Dembele in midfield, Harry Kane up front with Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado... and ol' Harry in the hot seat!

Stavros Makrozachopo:, external One of the biggest footballing crimes? Dismantling Harry Redknapp's Tottenham piece by piece.

Mark Lynch:, external For all the talk of Harry Kane, he won't do anything to solve the massive problem we have at the back - showed by Youne Kaboul's "performance".
