How good is Harry Kane? We may be about to find out. It's one thing plundering goals in the Europa League and Capital One Cup, but can he do it from the off in the top flight?

One thing for sure, if the away end at Villa Park last week is a decent barometer, he's already a massive fan favourite...

Paul Mulligan:, external Fantastic to see Harry Kane starting his first Premier League game this season. Should provide the composure we've missed in the final third.

Glen Turner:, external Pleased to see Kane starting but would have liked to see two up front. Roberto Soldado needs a strike partner!

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown: "Harry Kane has looked like a fan watching from the sidelines, watching Emmanuel Adebayor and thinking: 'I want what you've got, I can be more effective.' He certainly changed the game last week against Aston Villa, he came on and did the damage with that free-kick.

"Now he has to start a game like he does off the bench, but I think he is a really focused player. A lot of his game is about how much he wants to do well for his club.

"Also at Spurs there is Ryan Mason, who at 23 has been a long time coming. Mauricio Pochettino has seen something other managers there have not. And Mason has justified his selection, absolutely. The Tottenham fans look at players like Mason and Kane and think: 'That could be me.' It is so important for fans to have that connection with their players. Foreign players add value, but you have to have the local boys too."

The Sun's head of Sport Shaun Custis: "Emmanuel Adebyaor has not shown it in a Tottenham shirt, while Harry Kane does shows how much it means to him. You speak to the young Spurs fans now and the only autograph they want is Harry Kane's. You think of all the money they have spent on new players, and Kane is the one they are talking about!"

BBC Radio 5 live football correspondent John Murray: "The Tottenham supporters have got what they wanted and they are right to have been asking for Harry Kane to be in the team. From what I have seen he looks very promising. He's got a bit of Lee Chapman about him I think."

  5. Sunderland yet to convince?published at 12:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown: "It's been a big struggle for Sunderland this season. That 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Monday lifted spirits, but it flattered Sunderland. Everton are looking good again so it will be a tough game for Gus Poyet's side."

The Sun's head of sport Shaun Custis: "Connor Wickham gave them a lift last season, but it hasn't happened for him for yet. He must be disappointed how it's gone for him so far this season."

  8. Rooney right as England captain?published at 12:55 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

    MOTD2 Extra

BBC Radio 5 live football correspondent John Murray: "Roy Hodgson thinks Wayne Rooney has taken on the same things as Steven Gerrard did when he was captain. All being well Rooney should make that 100th appearance against Slovenia. Does Roy think that Rooney can be better? He's played so much football already in his career, but Hodgson thinks he can improve still by using that experience he's had over time."

The Sun's head of sport Shaun Custis: "Who else could Hodgson have given the captaincy to? Rooney has earned that right. The scrutiny is always on him and he has to play 50 per cent better than everyone else to get the credit. Gary Cahill is not seen as a leader, and not the right man for the job."

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown: "I think Wayne has looked better in a deeper role for England and Manchester United. He'll benefit from playing a Paul Scholes-esque role. That, in a way, might help his captaincy as less pressure on him to score further up the front."

    What has changed at Newcastle?

The Sun's head of sport Shaun Custis: "A little bit of confidence, Ayoze Perez has given the place a bit of a lift. He has suddenly become a crowd favourite. Perez has looked good, the crowd have gone with the run of form, Alan Pardew is relaxing a bit. But the minute the momentum gets going you know there is always a crash around the corner."

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown: "When you take the step up to the Premier League, you can almost fall asleep at the back for a brief second and the big players, the international players, come alive in the box and punish you. Michael Duff is learning, he's made more clearances than anyone else in the Premier League at the moment, so he is adapting.

"It's going to be a struggle for them. I know they've won that game now but I still can't see them getting out the bottom three.

"They can enjoy themselves for a little bit now and they can build. It will be tough for them, because it's still hard work to keep going and keep positive."

The Sun's head of sport Shaun Custis: "Burnley is a very passionate place. The whole town talks football. I think you could see yesterday how much those fans want them to succeed and stay in the Premier League.

"While Jose Mourinho complains about how quiet it is at Chelsea, this is a proper, historic football club with some of the most passionate and loud support around."

Burnley defender Michael Duff: "It is relief as much as anything else, we feel performances haven't been as bad as results. We weren't winning games, so to get that monkey off your back is a big thing.

"The gaffer is quite positive in everything that he does. We've been written off and are favourites to go down, but we were written off last year and proved everyone wrong, so we don't take any notice of what's being said on the outside. We've won a game now and we can move on.

"We've created chances and not scored as many as we'd have liked. We played West Ham off the park for 45 minutes a few weeks ago, they scored two in a couple of minutes and it was game over. We've learnt that we need to be more clinical in both boxes."

Getting to November without a league win under your belt is a massive worry for any club - so the fans, players and staff at Burnley will be celebrating hard today...

  14. Robin van Persie in decline?published at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

    MOTD2 Extra

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown: "Louis van Gaal is demonstrating that results are the most important thing. It is about wining points, and Manchester United are just a few off the top four now and are climbing that table. Van Gaal needs defenders back fit, but the worry for me is that Robin van Persie doesn't look half the player he was two years ago. He seems to have switched off in terms of his work rate."

BBC Radio 5 live football correspondent John Murray: "After the Manchester derby I thought there were signs of improvement there for Manchester United. I thought they might be moving in the right direction and if they could have a comfortable win at home to Crystal Palace they would be alright, but people do still seem to say they are taking one step forward and two steps back."

    Steve Bower
BBC Match of the Day commentator at The Hawthorns

"Nearly four years ago this was the fixture that spelt the end of Chris Hughton's managerial reign at Newcastle after a 3-1 defeat at The Hawthorns, and subsequently allowed Alan Pardew the opportunity to return to the top flight.

"The Newcastle boss has certainly faced some challenges since but four consecutive wins in all competitions and 10 points from the last 12 in the league has completely changed the mood on Tyneside.

"Alan Irvine is continuing to learn about his players and how to get the best out of them, but the recent signs are encouraging. He'll know the Baggies will have to be on top of their game to halt Newcastle's run."

  19. Postpublished at 12:44 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2014

    Steve Wilson
BBC Match of the Day commentator at White Hart Lane

"Ironic really: Mauricio Pochettino thinks the pitch at White Hart Lane is too narrow for his Tottenham team whereas, under Tony Pulis, Stoke sliced yards off their playing surface a few years ago to make it suit them better.

"I'd be surprised if Mark Hughes isn't slightly disappointed with how this season has gone so far for Stoke. Thirteenth in the table is respectable and they're three points better off than a year ago, but with a few things falling their way they could easily have had another four or five points.

"Big pitch or little pitch, Spurs would be well advised to treat Stoke with caution."

    Alistair Mann
BBC Match of the Day commentator at the Stadium of Light

"While it would be foolish to be dismissive of their humiliation at Southampton and the manner in which they gifted Arsenal victory, Sunderland's results prior to that terrible fortnight hadn't actually been too bad. They lost only one of their opening seven games, conceding just seven goals in that time.

"Visitors Everton have the same number of defeats as Sunderland. However, the Toffees' tally of seven points from the last three games has given a much more respectable look to their haul after just one win in their opening seven matches.

"You get the feeling that if the Black Cats can hold Everton at bay this weekend then this could prove to be a pivotal week in their season."
