Liverpool's defence leaves great big gaps and Yannick Bolasie is eager and cute enough to fill them to potentially decisive effect.

The Palace defender shrugs off Dejan Lovren out wide and sweeps a low cross into the centre where Joe Ledley, with Raheem Sterling and Steven Gerrard trailing, side-foots home through the legs of Simon Mignolet.

Sam Jones:, external The entire Crystal Palace XI currently on the pitch cost less than Adam Lallana. Liverpool look so average, Luis Suarez money completely wasted.

Jordan Johnson:, external I think I would rather have Yannick Bolasie than Lallana in my team.

Max Wattz:, external All top teams have a player that makes something out of nothing. Eden Hazard, Yaya Toure, Angel Di Maria etc. Liverpool got rid of theirs.

  5. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

Emre Can, who many Liverpool fans wanted to start, is going to get 15 minutes. Joe Allen still sporting some protective headwear is off.

Former QPR striker Bradley Allen: "Both teams in different ways are showing promise of a winner. Liverpool look good through their quality on the ball of individual players, Palace you feel could just nick a goal on the break."

Liverpool prise open the Palace defence for the first time in the second half. A neat give and go between Joe Allen and Adam Lallana draws the defenders' attention, opening space for Glen Johnson down the left.

Johnson's low cross is spilled by Julian Speroni, but the Palace goalkeeper regains his feet and the ball before Lallana or Rickie Lambert can pounce.

Yannick Bolasie, all elastic limbs and dropped shoulders, is giving Javier Manquillo a torrid time down the Palace left. This time though the Liverpool full-back gets the better of their contest, shepherding a heavy touch out behind for a goal kick.

Simon in York: There's no room for sentimentality in football. Steven Gerrard clearly doesn't have the dignity to just retire like Gary Neville did so the club need to get rid of him in my opinion. I understand he's desperate to win the Premier League but Liverpool can't continue to indulge him like this. He could be in his 60s or 70s by the time Liverpool surround him with good enough players to win a title. Just get rid.

Bill in Hereford: What has happened to Liverpool? They can't pass forward, they couldn't keep a clean sheet if their lives depended on it (nothing has changed there I suppose) and they don't look half or even a quarter as convincing when in attack as they did last season! I like Brendan Rodgers, he is a very good manager but he needs to sort this out soon.

Jacob in Derby: We (Liverpool) need to just accept that every time we even get close to success, it will always be followed by what our players and manager will describe as a period of 'transition'. Reality is that we'll never hold a period of success like Manchester United or Arsenal did.

Ohh! Yannick Bolasie flings himself at a cross at the far post, but he is a good foot short of making any contact.

Palace's fans are bouncing. Brendan Rodgers has told Fabio Borini to warm up.

Palace have clearly been told to get bodies around around Simon Mignolet at set-pieces. The Liverpool goalkeeper is mobbed at the corner, and Jon Moss decides having to make your way through a mosh-pit crush to claim a corner is a little unfair.

Javier Manquillo gets a fistful of Marouane Chamakh's shirt after getting spun by the Moroccan. He drags down the Palace striker just inches short of the box. A fully-deserved yellow card, and Mile Jedinak's shot deflects over the bar from the resulting free-kick.

    BBC Radio London 94.9

Former QPR striker Bradley Allen: "Dwight Gayle has led the line tremendously well for Palace. He has not stopped running all afternoon for Neil Warnock. Liverpool's defence have not had a moment of peace. This game is there to be won for Crystal Palace if they want it. They need to take a few risks but it would be a massive three points for Neil Warnock's side if they can get it."

Steven Gerrard's shooting boots are somewhere up on Merseyside. The Liverpool skipper has his fourth shot of the match, this time from 25 yards, and he is yet to trouble Julian Speroni.

Liverpool are starting to edge a little closer. Rickie Lambert kicks a Palace defender rather than the ball from Javier Manquillo's cut-back, almost combines with Philippe Coutinho on the edge of the box and then watches Martin Skrtel slash over the top as the ball dropped invitingly to the Slovak at the back stick from a deep corner.

It is far from last season's heights, but is better than the depths of this current campaign.
