MOTD's Simon Brotherton at White Hart Lane

"Jermain Defoe's arrival on a three-and-a-half year deal on big wages illustrates how concerned Sunderland are about the very real threat of relegation.

"It sounds like a massive commitment to a 32-year-old, but if he helps to keep them in the Premier League they'll feel it is money well spent.

"With Defoe arriving in a swap deal for Jozy Altidore, it has provided the perfect conclusion for both the USA international striker and the club. Goals have been a real problem this season for the whole team with only 18 scored in 21 games, the second lowest total in the top flight."

  2. Postpublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

MOTD's Guy Mowbray at the Liberty Stadium

"It's wonderful for Chelsea to have two fantastic keepers vying to play, but is it a waste of talent to have had Petr Cech sitting on the bench all season so far? At 32, one of the best to have ever kept goal still has plenty of saves left in him.

"This marks Swansea's first game since Wilfried Bony's move to Manchester City, with boss Garry Monk insisting that the £25m received for him (plus £3m worth of add-ons) won't burn a hole in his pocket this transfer window."

  3. Postpublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

MOTD's John Roder at Turf Moor

"The last two occasions I have been to Turf Moor have both been momentous days, for very different reasons. In April 2010 the Clarets were relegated from the Premier League after defeat to Liverpool, while in April of last year they were promoted back to the top division following victory over Wigan.

"Last Easter Monday, I was down on the pitch immediately after that match, interviewing players as the celebrations were in full swing; it was a memorable moment to be caught up in the emotion of the day.

"Victory for either of these sides this weekend won't provoke such wild scenes of joy but could play a part in leading to some come the end of the season."

  4. Postpublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

MOTD's Steve Bower at Villa Park

"It didn't need this week's weather warning to bring the dark clouds to Villa Park. They have been hovering for a while.

"The sky had looked so much brighter for Aston Villa when they beat Liverpool at Anfield in September to take their early-season points tally to 10 out of a possible 12.

"Since then, though, they have won only twice in 17 league matches. You don't need a debate to agree on their glaring problem - one goal in their last six games, and 11 all season in 21 matches."

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert: "We just need to finish off the work that we have been doing. Scoring for us has been a problem but the rest of our game has been ok.

"New signing Carles Gil is on the bench but there is a good chance he will come on. The support here is massive and we need them behind us every time."

  8. The pound shop cup final?published at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew: "I don't know about going on the attack but you need to take the emphasis away from Burnley here. I'm hoping we have as much punch as their front two because they're good.

"It does haven't have a lot of glamour. Burnley v Crystal Palace might not stir the emotions but for the two clubs it's enormous, almost like a cup final."

  9. Crocodile 1 Arjen Robben 0published at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

"Mate, fancy getting the ball out of that crocodile infested pool?" "Nah you're alright, cheers".

I think it is a pretty safe to say that we would all respond with something similar if ever asked that question. Not Arjen Robben, though.

The Bayern Munich winger reportedly dipped his hand into some water close to where the German team is holding some winter training in Qatar to retrieve a football and got bitten by a crocodile, hurting his thumb as a consequence.

"When I got a ball from the hole by the pool, a crocodile bit me," Robben reportedly said., external

That's got to be up there as one of the most bizarre injuries picked up in football, if true?

"Massive result that for Forest. Shows they have strong characters in the dressing room to perform like that when confidence was so low!"

  12. Manager reactionpublished at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January 2015

Nottingham Forest manager Stuart Pearce, speaking to Sky Sports: "We had a game-plan and stuck to that, credit to the players. The dressing room is buoyant at the moment as you can imagine. Over the past few weeks we have beaten ourselves, we have been nervous and tentative, but the two boys we have brought in on loan and young Benny Osborn, who came through the academy, they have all put a real shift in this week.

"I'm very pleased for the owner who stayed loyal and patient. We have to emulate the likes of Derby who have been patient over a number of years and built a good side. Judge me at the end of the season. Is this a better football club than we were last season? I say yes, but we have to keep working, hopefully this will spark us on."

Manchester United have recalled Radamel Falcao after leaving him out of the squad for last week's defeat by Southampton. He comes in in place of the injured Robin van Persie while Marcos Rojo is in for Luke Shaw and, in a change to the initial team sheet, Jonny Evans is in for Chris Smalling.

    Carles Gil

Who's Carles Gil? The midfielder joined Aston Villa from Valencia earlier this week for £3.2m on a four-and-a-half-year deal.

The Spain Under-21 international, who spent the past two seasons on loan at Elche, has scored one goal in eight La Liga games for Valencia this term.

Villa have scored just 11 goals in 21 Premier League games this season, is Gil the answer?

Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph comes straight back into the manager Paul Lambert's starting line-up after a three-match ban as he replaces the injured Joe Cole. The club's new signing Carles Gil is on the bench, while defender Ciaran Clark, who serves a one-game ban, is replaced by Nathan Baker.

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard, who came off against Sunderland last week with a tight hamstring, misses out. He is replaced by forward Raheem Sterling, who starts after he was given a break by manager Brendan Rodgers. Striker Mario Balotelli is not in the Reds squad.

Aston Villa XI: Guzan, Hutton, Okore, Baker, Cissokho, Sanchez, Westwood, Delph, Cleverley, Agbonlahor, Benteke.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Markovic, Moreno, Lucas, Henderson, Sterling, Coutinho, Borini.

    Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge
BBC Radio 5 live at the iPro Stadium

"The agony and ecstasy of football, both for managers and supporters. Just to see Stuart Pearce when Forest scored their second goal, that was all the strains of the past few weeks let out in one moment.

"This is an unbelievable result in the context of the two teams' form. But this game is weird and wonderful, and it's a fantastic achievement for Pearce's side."
